His "allotted time" is 70 years, the symbolic number 7 being complete, since he is only halfway there though, he has time to go back to the true way. 10 is perfection.Woods=trees=eden, the woods=worldliness=original sin. Dante sees joyous symbols, the sun (divine illumination) shining on a hill (joy/ascension). It is the Easter season so he has the hope of rebirth. Three Beasts of Worldliness (allusion to Jeremiah): the leopard of malice and fraud(lust, described as beautiful), the lion of violence and ambition(enormous, represents pride), and the she wolf of incontinence(appears to be wasting away and represents greed) these three beasts send him back to the forest, so essentially his greed, lust, and pride keep him from reaching the joy hill. Then when all seems lost virgil shows up to be Dante's moral mentor. He tells him that to get around the beasts, he must descend through

    Hell (The Recognition of Sin), then he must ascend

    through Purgatory (The Renunciation Of Sin). and only

    then may he reach joy and heaven. Virgil is his human mentor so he can only take him so far, he needs a divine mentor Beatrice who represents divine love to help him ascend above humanity.
