Internal Verification

The purpose of internal verification is to ensure that internally assessed units have assessments that fit the criteria and assessment is consistently graded across the programme. Internal verification is designed to ensure there is fairness, consistency and quality in assessments. It is seen as a requirement by both BTEC and Regent College as it is important in ensuring that assignments are marked according to national standards. It can also be seen as professional development as it allows teachers to reflect on their marking and justify these decisions.

Internal verification consists of selecting a sample of work for each unit and completing the document below. Once the internal verification process is complete, the verifier would either agree or disagree with the decision made regarding the criteria met. If the internal verifier disagrees, they would work with the teacher to justify their decision and amend the mark given.

In my opinion, internal verification is necessary as it enables students to receive a grade that is fair and it also gives teachers the opportunity to collaborate with one another. However, it can be time consuming as teachers have other responsibilities.

Observation records

Observation records are used internally as evidence of assessment e.g. discussions or role play. It is a formal record of the assessor's judgement on a learner's performance against the criteria. Observation records should provide primary evidence of performance and provide specific feedback for improvements. It should also provide sufficient evidence for others to make a judgement and confirm national standards have been achieved. Observation records are usually accompanied by supporting evidence such as notes, cue cards etc.

Observation records can be a valid way of showing whether a learner has met the criteria with comments from the assessor and relevant supporting evidence.

I think using observations to assess are a great alternative to other assessment methods such as assignments or tests as it allows the assessor to examine learners in a more natural context.

ProMonitor is an integrated system which allows teachers to record learners' progress, grades and targets of each unit taught. It displays individual learner pages and is an effective tool in monitoring learners' achievements holistically as teachers can see targets and grades given by other teachers.

ProMonitor is a beneficial tool as it enables teachers to gain instant access to all the information for a learner. I think it should be used and updated more regularly however, there are time constraints.

Witness statements are used to provide a record of learner performance. It does not necessarily have to be completed by the teacher and can be completed by a work experience placement supervisor. Witness statements do not confirm an assessment decision.

The validity of witness statements can be improved if the witness provides a context within which it is set, the witness is provided with a clear specification for a successful performance and the criteria that is being achieved. These details can also add validity and authenticity to the comments made on the witness statement.

I think witness statements are an important tool in assessing learners, however it can be limiting as we only have the information on the witness statement. On the other hand, observation records are more valid and authentic as it is accompanied by relevant supporting evidence.

Declaration forms

Declaration forms are used by assessors and learners to confirm the authenticity of the work. It is also used to show whether learners have achieved the criteria or not. Declaration forms must be attached to every assignment handed in by the learners.

Under the ruling of BTEC, teachers can only comment on which criteria the learner has achieved and which criteria the learner has not achieved. Teachers cannot specifically comment on why learners have not met the criteria and what they can do to meet it. They can provide some guidance and give reference to resources that they could look at such as assignment brief, class notes etc.

I think declaration forms are a good way of providing feedback on assignments to learners. However, this should be accompanied with a one to one meeting to give detailed feedback to learners which allows the learner to ask questions. I have observed that learners are confused with only written comments for feedback. I have tried to implement one to one meetings with my learners to ensure they are given verbal feedback. This also gives them the opportunity to voice any concerns. However, this is impossible to do for each assignment due to time constraints.

Assessment records are beneficial as it allows teachers to monitor progress, provides constructive feedback to learners and shows achievement. It enables teachers to ensure all units have been completed, inform planning and ensure learners are given opportunities to improve. Assessment records gives teachers an insight on the achievements of learners and determine whether extra support is needed. In addition, it can be used to inform parents of their child's achievements and progress and ensure there is support for the learner's development.

Student feedback and review meetings

Student feedback is essential as it provides learners with the opportunity to be informed of their progress and how improvements can be made. Regent College hold review meetings three times a year to allow students to reflect on their achievements and behaviour and to give students grades and feedback from all teachers. However, review meetings are held by teachers who do not teach that particular student. This makes it difficult to have an honest conversation as the teacher is only using the information given on ProMonitor to provide feedback to the student. In my opinion, students need to have one to one meetings with teachers who actually teach them as they can give a detailed explanation of their progress. They can also give them realistic targets to improve.

To monitor progress and keep a track of all of my learners' marks, I have created a table to record their achievements for each unit. I update my records once I have marked the assignments. I find this method beneficial as it allows me to get an insight into a learner's work completion and achievements. In addition, a written record means I avoid the risk of losing it or being deleted if it was on Excel. However, the benefits of creating a table on Excel is that I can display it on the board in lessons. This allows learners to see their progress and achievements. It also creates healthy competition between learners as they feel encouraged to meet all their deadlines. This method has been suggested to me by my mentor.

I think record keeping at Regent College could be improved by ensuring students have a record of their own progress. This would encourage them to take responsibility for their learning and achievements. I would also like to get more input from students to gain an insight on their views on Health and Social Care. In addition, I feel that there is too much paper work and it should be condensed by having one declaration form for each unit for each learner rather than each assignment.
