In the beginning of the poem, the author describes Chicago's bad side. He calls Chicago ¨Hog Butcher for the World¨ and ¨City of Big Shoulder¨.Carl Sandburg stars off by describing the conditions of living in Chicago. There are murders and half-naked women who roam around freely with starving mothers and their kids. At the end of the poem, the author calls Chicago ¨Hog Butcher for the World¨ but he says that Chicago is proud to be call those names. Despite
Chicago´s flaws, there's beauty in it.

The opening line of the poem talks about a white spider, sitting on a white flower, holding a white moth in its jaws. It then continues to compare the scenario to a witches' broth. The purpose of the lines was to make a connection between the perfectly white objects being like ingredients to a bigger recipe, in this case a recipe for destruction of the moth. The final lines of the poem question the relationship these objects based on their designs. The author does this by implying the designs of the objects must be dictated by a greater force
