The two students in the picture were initially playing with musical instruments. I then approached them and said, "what would you like to play?" They exclaimed, "Transformers!" They then ran over to the area with the large blocks and pulled out a bin full of toy cars. I asked them how they played Transformers. They began by showing us all of the cars and then started pulling out and naming their favorites. They seemed to enjoy the airplanes and helicopters the most. I then asked them what they do to play Transformers, and they proceeded to tell us that the Transformers "battle" the dinosaurs. From what I observed, there really was not any math involved with what they were playing. I could have made connections to mathematical concepts but I was not sure how to do so with the activity they were participating in.

What should the teacher do next?

The students evidently enjoyed playing with the cars quite a bit, so the teachers could incorporate the cars into a mathematics lesson. The students could sort the cars by color or type and then count how many there are of each color. They could continue from there and compare how many there are in each group. For example, the teacher could ask if there are more blue cars than green cars and the students could put those two groups beside each other. Then they could count the number of blue cars and green cars and tell the teacher which group has more. Since they also liked the dinosaurs, they could sort those based on color or type of dinosaur, if they have knowledge of that. Something else the teacher could have the students do is compare the different sizes of the cars.
