The pain you're feeling at the moment in your heart is called angina. What this means is, the little tubes around your heart are struggling to push the blood flow through normally to your heart. This is possibly caused by some build up- like speed bumps- in your arteries. When blood cant flow through normally to the heart, this puts a strain on heart, which causes your pain.
-SAR

Angina is caused by a reduction of blood flow within the heart. The muscles within the heart require an oxygen supply to function. Oxygen is provided to the cells through a consistent flow of blood. Angina is triggered by physical exertion, stress and fear. When the body experiences an increase of physical activity the heart becomes constricted causing chest pain.

The reasoning behind why you have been diagnosed with angina, which is the pain that you are describing in your chest, commonly described as a tightening and discomfort in the chest. This could be caused from plaque that we all develop throughout our lives, there are small amounts of plaque which is a build-up of material found throughout your body as you age this build up can become crucial as the plaque blocks the blood vessels, this also connects with a lack of oxygen that your blood supplies causing restriction of the blood flow into your blood vessels. Commonly this due to stress (whether physical or emotional) or potentially after eating at times.

This medication will help you pain stop. The way it does this, is by opening up your little tubes near your heart, or like my example with the speed bumps- it makes the effect of them less, which allows your blood to flow more easily and this will mean no more pain.

What is angina?

Angina is a pain in your chest. It can feel like a heavy feeling. It is caused by a low amount of oxygen going to your heart. This is from the tubes that deliver blood to your heart are smaller then they usually are so not enough blood is getting through to parts of your heart. This means your heart is working harder to pump blood around your body. Angina is caused by stress, like eating or exercising or emotional feelings like being sad, angry or scared.

What is GTN (pharmacokinetics)?

GTN is a special tablet which you put under your tongue and soaks into your blood stream where the tubes of your blood is. Which means it doesn’t go to the liver therefore goes straight to the heart and isn’t taken by the liver, the GTN stops the pain of the angina in a few minutes.

How does GTN work (pharmacodynamics)?

GTN relaxes the tubes that deliver blood into the heart and makes them open up so more blood can go into your heart, which stops the heart from working really hard. This makes the pain stop as the heart is now getting enough oxygen in through the blood.

You should take it when you first feel chest pain, and take it while your sitting down, relaxed. Do this for 5-10mins. If you still have pain after this, take one more tablet, that say way. If still doesnt help, call 000.
-SAR

Angina is caused by low blood supply to a portion of the heart, because the pipes that supply the heart with blood have been blocked. This causes chest pain and may cause death to a portion of the heart if nothing is done about it. Stable angina usually results in chest pain after exercise, stress or after eating. As there is already increased effort on your heart to supply the amount of blood needed, activity, stress and eating make it even harder for the heart to receive enough blood supply.

GTN works in two ways. It relaxes blood vessels in the body by causing them to widen, and this reduces the strain on the heart, making it easier for the heart to pump blood around the body.

I t also relaxes and widens blood vessels in the heart (coronary arteries), which increases the flow of blood to the heart muscle.

Adverse event profile: If you start to feel like your heart is beating really fast, your face is red or hot-to-touch, a really bad headache, feeling dizzy or uneasy, like you are going to faint or vomit then your blood pressure may be too low. GTN may have relaxed the pipes that supply blood to your heart too much. Sit down straight away and see if these feelings go away by themselves. If any of the above feelings have not gone away you should call the ambulance on 000 as you may be having a bad reaction to GTN and need some medical help.
