The story takes place in london.
Mr. Hyde is a character that is very mysterious and secretive.  When it comes to his public personality, he prefers to stay in the shadows.
Utterson (Lawyer)- he’s very curious about the condition of Dr. Jekyll.

“Mr Hyde was pale and dwarfish, he gave an impression of deformity without any nameable malformation, he had a displeasing smile, he had borne himself to the lawyer with a sort of murderous mixture of timidity and boldness, and he spoke with a husky, whispering and somewhat broken voice.”  -Mr Hyde is the dark side of Dr. Jekyll but he seems and looks different whenever he takes control of the body.

Mrs. Saville R. Walton. Walton is sending letters to Mrs. Saville, which is his sister, and he is going to a town to try and buy a boat from someone to sail to the north pole to try to find a passage to other countries, and to discover the origin of the north pole’s magnetism

What happened in the book you read today?  What characters have you met so far?
  • Charles Dickens was explaining the characteristics and personality of Scrooge. Ebenezer Scrooge, Jacob Marley(dead),  and Bob Cratchit are all the characters that I’ve met so far.

Find a quote that stands out to you and explain why you chose it.
  • 'A squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous old sinner!' This quote stood out to me because of all the words used to describe our main character Ebenezer Scrooge. The author: Charles Dickens managed to put all these descriptive words into one quote. These words were also used to describe some of the other characters in Charles Dickens’ stories.

I picked this book because Frankenstein has always been one of my favorite characters for the “Halloween” time. Something is just really cool about him, and makes him stand out compared to the other ones.

Are there Gothic Characteristics displayed by  that character?
Jonathan Harker was the first character that we met, but now Count Dracula has made an appearance. Jonathan has a very uneasy feeling about being around Dracula. He feels unsafe and he wishes to go home because strange things keep happening and he feels that Dracula is a strange person. Jonathan doesn’t display gothic characteristics, but Dracula does. Dracula is dressed in all black clothing, he lives in a castle/courtyard that looks abandoned at first glance, and he acts very suspicious and evil. 

What gives the novel's characters strength? What weakens the novel's characters?
Some strengths about Jonathan is that he was brave enough to go visit Count Dracula and go inside of a eery looking place. Some weaknesses of Jonathan is that he is easily scared and often shows that he doesn’t want to be there anymore. Some strengths about Dracula is that he is very authoritive and he has a lot of power over everything, including Jonathan. I have yet to find any weaknesses about Dracula.

Within, stood a tall old man, clean shaven save for a long white moustache, and clad in black from head to foot, without a single speck of colour about him anywhere.” I chose this quote because Dracula is just now being introduced into the book and it describes what he looks like. The description of Dracula shows examples of gothic characteristics.

Letter 2 
I love this quote because it explains what so many people deal with. The longing to continue on with the hard labor and the want to travel. It is very beautifully worded as well.

I chose this book because I think Dracula is going to be a great read. I feel it is going to be full of great detail. I think they will make you feel part of the story while reading this story.  Out of all the stories  this one was most interesting to close to halloween.

I chose this quote because it shows that Scrooge doesn’t care for Christmas and everybody else shouldn’t care either and no one should be merry on Christmas.

“He is not easy to describe….And it’s not want of memory; for I declare I can see him this moment.”

I chose this quote because it really shows how the author has such a way of making the reader feel the strangeness and the unseen mystery to the novel by not using regular description of a character. Instead he helps you connect with what the characters are seeing by not using regular describing words but by how the characters cannot describe him using words.

My main character is portrayed as very  negetive man. He is displayed as a gothic character for example he gets discribed as a squezzing, wrencching, gasping, scraping, cluthing, covetous old sinner.

What gives the novel's characters strength? What weakens the novel's characters?
His firm rude attidue makes up Scrooge’s character and something that weakens the novels character is the fact that he lives all alone in this old creepy house now.

There is Scrooge and then his nephew as well as Marley, but Marley is dead. Scrooge and Marley were partners, the firm was known as Scrooge and Marley. Marley has been dead for 7 years now and as the years go on it has gotten harder and harder for Scrooge.

“External heat and cold had little influence on Scrooge. No warmth could warm, no wintry weather chill him.” Pg.14
“A squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping,  clutching, covetous old sinner." Pg. 13
I chose these quotes because it makes you imagine how bitter Scrooge really is, it makes you realize that not everyone is super cheerful around Christmas and Scrooge just so happens to be one of those people.

Robert Walton is sailing to the North Pole. He is trying to find a passage from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. His sister’s name is Mrs. Saville, this is who he is writing to. Mrs Saville lives in London. Robert is a very lonely man who has no friends and he is scared that if something happens and he is not able to complete his journey that he will not have any friends to help him with his depression.
Find a quote that stands out to you and explain why you chose it.“I am required not only to raise the spirits of others, but sometimes to sustain my own, when theirs is failing.” pg. 7 I really like this quote because even though he is going on a rough and dangerous voyage, he is still doing his best to keep others spirits up no matter what may be happening.
