Although each individual person is leading their own life, it is their civil and moral obligation to be aware of others as we all impact both the people and the environment around us. “The Great Gatsby” draws out a similar idea from the text as the individual actions that each character takes impacts everyone around them, and for that reason we as citizens become responsible for not only ourselves, but the others around us.

We should all be responsible for one another. If no one in the world cared about the well being of others or they didn’t help those who needed help the world would fall. When we don’t have responsibility for one another our relationships fall. For example in the Great Gatsby, Nick didn’t do all that he could to help Gatsby move on from Daisy, as a result from this Gatsby took the blame for the death of Myrtle Wilson, even though it was Daisy’s fault, and was shot and killed by Mr. Wilson. Having responsibility for one another prevents others from getting hurt.

In modern society, people interact with one another on a daily basis. Although one can be completely self independent, the average person is partly responsible for the people they interact with every day. Just as Nick befriended Gatsby in “The Great Gatsby”, Nick helped him with many of his life endeavors. Nick even went so far as to be only one of two people at Gatsby’s funeral. To an extent, everyone who interacts with each other on a daily basis is responsible for one another.

Humanity is more connected than we realize sometimes as every action you do affects almost everybody, this is apparent in shows and movies that use the butterfly effect in which a very little change to a complex system results in a huge change. What we must come to terms with is that we can not prevent what has already happened, just like how Gatsby wants Daisy to forget about the many years of her life without Gatsby and to say she never loved Tom. Gatsby is too busy living in the past to worry about his future with Daisy and he lets his chance go by, ultimately leading to his demise.

If we stress about caring for others it will only hold us back in life. We have to beware of others who attempt to take care of us because they may be doing it for their own personal interests. In the Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby is not caring for Nick Carraway, he is playing with Nicks’s emotion for his ow
n benefit.

As a society we are to better ourselves and others. It is our duty to help and look out for each other. Therefore we are responsible for each other because we are part of the same overall group, and whatever affects one, affects all. As seen in The Great Gatsby, once one part of society secludes itself from the rest, the country starts to decay.

In the grand scope of the world, our actions seem to play little to no significance in global matters, giving us a false sense of diminishment in our importance as a global citizen. However, it is through our direct, individual actions that we affect those around us; and thus in a chain-reaction, we indirectly influence people we
have not yet met, or never meet. Thereby, we play a role in the development of the world, no matter how big or small it may be, through our effectual change we may bring into other people’s lives. This global/country-wide impact our lives have on the world has been discussed and explained by many authors of literature, including F. Scott Fitzgerald, and his famed work The Great Gatsby.

We are responsible for one another in that we must not do anything that will negatively impact others. We don’t necessarily have to help others, but we can’t hurt them. In the Great Gatsby, we witness multiple characters directly undermine others when leaving them alone would be a better option. An example would be Jordan's relationship with Nick.
