"Sometimes I wish I'd find a zipper on the back of my head so I could unzip my skin and find the real me underneath." (132)

"He looked at me like one of those sad old dogs in a shelter that no one wanted to take home." (296)
This quote is an example of a simile. It shows how Ozzie's friend, Lua, pities Ozzie for not fully trusting in their friendship.

"Then he held the Doctor Who shirt I'd bought him against his chest and said, 'Thanks, Oz.' (142)
This quote is an example of an allusion. The t-shirt alludes to the famous TV show, Doctor Who.

"Ahead of us, at the top of a man-made hill, stood a five-story wooden tower. It was the tallest object around; taller than the trees." (278)
This quote is an example of imagery. It explains the size of the tower ahead of the two characters viewing it.

"The stars had vanished. No. They hadn't vanished. I'd given them away to someone who hadn't deserved them, and I'd never get them back." (188)

The Universe
As a representation of Ozzie's mindset and perspective, the universe shrinking shows his selfishness. Tommy breaking up with him made Ozzie devastated; Ozzie had never imagined a life without his one true love, and he had never dared to invent himself outside of Tommy. He had no idea who he was. While that is the reason for their breakup, Ozzie denied this fact. He only wanted to focus on his own needs, like he is the center of the universe, which he becomes when thee universe itself shrinks down to surround him.

The Journal
Ozzie keeps a record of all of his memories over the years in a journal. That includes everything from his childhood to present day. A majority of it is filled with memories of Tommy, but when the universe decides to steal Tommy away, all of those memories are rewritten to fit the reality. For instance, instead of Tommy being Ozzie's first boyfriend, he was replaced with a guy named Erik. This is a representation of Ozzie's undying faith. Memories can be easily altered to fit our standards, or change based on influence; yet Ozzie continued to search for Tommy, to love Tommy, and to never give up on him.

I chose these items to be a part of my list because they are pivotal and significant events from the novel. Each event affects Ozzie's decisions and mindset, questioning whether what he chooses to do is even worth doing, whether this will all lead to an answer, or whether he will be left to die in a void alone

The picture below is titled "Alternate Realities". It relates to the novel because the book talks about different theories relating to alternate realities, and it makes us question whether we also have alternate realities. Is there another Earth in another universe, with people living lives like us but not exactly? Are they conjured by our own fantasies, like Ozzie's? We'll never know.
