It’s an effective way of keeping the amount of strays down, and keeping animal shelters less crowded.
If an animal is found to not be micro-chipped, one will be fitted at the time of scanning.

There have been a few rare reported cases of animals becoming ill, or even dying due to incorrectly fitted microchips. Although most of the time microchips are fitted without an issue and the dogs continue to live normal lives.

Pets at Home for example, are charging £15 per animal as of 15th of April 2016.

Most microchips are fitted without anaesthetic but this is down to the vet’s discretion. A microchip is about the size of a grain of rice.
