While Colón was asking all of those questions on the lady's reactions, I would probably not internally ask any questions. I would most likely go up to the lady and become friendly with her first, and then offer to help so it wouldn't be awkward. When I help someone I feel accomplished, instead of thinking back and thinking I was so lazy. I would also feel a lot of guilt and regret later on if I didn't help them. I would have reacted similarly. Based on the time this took place (1955/1956) the views on people of color were typically prejudice, so I would react similarly in the sense that I would be hesitant and worried about asking. I would not approach the lady however I would just ask her if she needed help from a small distance like across the train if she was sitting across from me. I would either do that or I would ask when she was getting up and leaving, so I don't need to have possible confrontation but still offering my help. I think the true meaning of this article is that showing that you care really matters. While the woman probably didn't expect help, if the boy did help her, he could've changed that lady's whole day. He showed no signs of caring and in a. more serious situation, it could end up really bad. Even just by not. showing that he cared, it could easily make the woman. have racist thoughts. Especially during the time this happened, it would be. extremely important to show that he cares. At first, the boy didn't realize that it mattered.
