Authors: Aguirre-Muñoz & Pantoya (2016)
This article outlines the study of six ESL Kindergarten students and the effect of engineering-centered literature and academic discussions to enhance students' engagement and achievement. The frequencies of three types of engagement were recorded: behavioral, affective, and cognitive. Participation in discussions was also recorded. Results were as follows: engagement increased during hands-on activities for all students, as well as during the picture book read-aloud with active engagement activities. Researchers concluded that the combination of activities in the intervention is effective for English language learners and can improve engagement for all ability levels. Results showed a relationship between enjoying the learning activities and being motivated to participate in discussion, meaning engineered-centered literature and academic discussions are an effective strategy for increasing participation.

http://library.marygrove.edu:2048/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com.library.marygrove.edu:2048/login.aspx?direct=true&db=eft&AN=118988745&site=ehost-live&scope=site
