Governance & Inclusion Workshop by 25jeremya

Reflect on the eligibility of candidates, as well as the timing and voting of previous HS StuCo elections. Answer the following questions in a short (bullet points are ok!) post below: 1) How inclusive were the previous elections (of people from different backgrounds and ages)? 2) How represented did you feel by the candidates? 3) What is one way the elections could be improved?

I would say that the elections are fairly inclusive, as anyone can run. I think new students or unpopular are discouraged from running because if you want to get in you need a large friend group who will vote for you, and I think that elections are decided more about who is the most socially popular candidate rather than who is the best choice for the role, and these candidates are often older and have been in the school longer so they have had more time to make friends. I feel represented enough by this years student council though and it seems fairly diverse. I would fix the elections by addressing the problem above, and I would fix this by making candidates make a speech to either the existing student council or involved teachers about why they would actually make a good candidate, and having those people screen the candidates, instead of addressing the student body with no real pre-requisites.

I don’t feel much going on that’s making a huge difference for me, and I haven’t really wanted anything and going to StuCo for that yety
Improving elections - not just completely equal votes because a bigger friend group would just push some people up.
