It's meaningful because it shows the growth of Tambu's knowledge and how her epiphany matures her

Tambu's reluctance to get out of bed. her out of body experience - meaningful because this is the first time in the novel that Tambu goes through something like this.

"My muscles simply refused to obey the half-hearted commands I was issuing them"

"I knew I would not get out of bed because I did not want to"

"It was easier to lie there on my back, apparently paralysed and staring at the ceiling"

Tambu's first major stand of any sort vs Baba - This is meaningful because this is the first time Tambu stands up to anyone, finding her voice.

"'I am sorry, Babamukuru' I said, ' but I do not want to go to the wedding'

" I found I could speak again and speak I did"

Baba's anger and how it is all to keep up appearances - This is the first time Baba has an outburst on Tambu for the first time

"He said I was ungrateful, that I did not respect him"

" 'She is growing into a bad child.

This is meaningful because Tambu’s lack of will and mind demonstrates her inner crisis in her character. She doesn't want to fight Baba and thus when she shows resistance, she feels guilty that, she feels like she owes everything to Baba.

"I tried several times but my muscles simply refused to obey the half-hearted commands I was issuing to them."

"I knew I could not get out of bed because I did not want to"

Tambu’s defiance of Baba’s is meaningful because Tambu is breaking her upmost respect of Baba, she saw him as her saviour, now she .

"She knows she is in my house not because of herself but because of my kindness and generosity."
"He said I was ungrateful, that I did not respect him."

Baba's outburst shows us that he's not used to resistance and that Tambu is showing resistance is a failing to him.

"Anyone who defies my authority is an evil thing is this house, bent on destroying what I have made"

"You are not a good girl."

Thesis Statement: This extract is meaningful because Tambu finally finds her voice, thus relieving the tension she has been feeling. This is a key moment in terms of Tambu's maturation - she is beginning to act in accordance with her thoughts.

1. Tambu's paralysis - her out of body experience. Everything that she is objects to supporting this wedding
-"The next morning, the morning of the wedding, I found I could not get out of bed."
"...I appeared to have slipped out of my body.."
"I could not get out of bed because I did not want to"
2. Baba's threats and the risk of losing everything she has always wanted don't sway her
"The body on the bed did not even twitch"
"...smiled smugly, thinking that I had gone somewhere where he could not reach me, and I congratulated myself for being so clever."
"If you do not go to the wedding, you are saying you no longer want to live here."
3. Tambu stands by her values and beliefs. She packs her bags, accepting her fate because she has done what is right. Doesn't bow to external pressure
""I found I could speak again and speak I did."
"...it did not matter any more. Babamukuru did not know how I had suffered over the question of that wedding."
"I accepted that I had forfeited my right to Babamukuru's charity."
