Composition 1 - As Academic as it Gets.

Reflect, Explain, Situate:
One thing I am proud of that I made this semester was the first paper we had to write, Composition 1. Composition 1 is basically an assignment where you had to choose a topic that was of a great deal of interest to you and make that topic into an academic paper as much as possible, whatever an acacdemic paper may mean to you. This assignment was to help ease our class into the main project, the Extended Inquiry Project. I ended up choosing my EIP topic because of this paper. I chose tattoos as my topic because when I turned 18, and could then get legal tattoos, I opened up a WHOLE new world of art and freedom of expression that I have never had myself, before. Being able to express myself is a big part of my persona, so it was very easy to write about a topic that helps me express myself more. Because of this assignment, I created a petition to try and lift individual businesses 'body art policy', which is basically a way to discriminate against people with tattoos and piercings. I learned from doing research that individual businesses discriminate against body art pretty harshly in the work force. To me, this is not fair because tattoos are a way of expressing yourself like many other things. One should not be reprimanded for expressing themselves and separating themselves against all of society, they should be praised.

SLO Reflection/Discussion:
Another thing I am proud of that I made this semester was this petition. While I was making this petition I came across using a lot of SLO's. The main two SLO's that I used repeatedly in this petition in particular were Critical Reflection and Course Inquiry. In order to make this petition, I had to do a good amount of research to verify the information that I was receiving was correct and then I also interpreted that research information in order to make the petition, which is critical reading! I also used the SLO course inquiry, that I obtained through learning about my writing process throughout the semester on how to go about researching such an in-depth topic, as in an EIP. This petition may not mean a lot to someone else or have any worth at all, but to me, this petition proves to many people that teenagers are capable of making a change if they really want it. If there were to be something I could change on this composition, I would change the website I used to make the petition. Just for visual purposes.

Extended Inquiry Project

Reflect/Explain/Situation & SLO Reflection/Discussion
The first thing I want to say about this project is how happy I am that I got to experience extended inquiry research, especially because the Extended Inquiry Project is chosen by me, about matters that I relate to and can discuss in extended inquiry. At first, I had no clue where to really branch off with this Extended Inquiry Project idea. I knew that I was going to make my Extended Inquiry Project on something related to my Composition 1, which was about the art of tattoos. Honestly, the only way that I thought about my Extended Inquiry Project idea (Body Art Discrimination in the Professional Workforce), was by listening to my grandma talk.... crazy, right? My grandmother is not much different than other grandmothers, she likes to give out that tough love. Anyways, I had just gotten my first tattoo and my grandma almost looked offended. After asking her why she had the look on her face as she did, her only response was: "You are never going to get a real job now." Wow. That hits home when you are a striving college student and after putting something really significant on your skin, permanently. Since I heard those words from my grandma, I decided that there could not be anything else that I wanted to do my Extended Inquiry Project on. Since that moment, I regret absolutely nothing. I have found out some horrible truths about employers in the professional workforce, but that is not going to get me down. I believe that teenagers, especially the Millennials should not have to worry about the fact that ink being on their skin or having their skin pierced is going to affect the career that they worked so hard to achieve thought college. Where there is a will, there is a way. I have put my petition as far out in social media as I could go. My only hope is that other Millennials feel the same way I do, and so far, everything looks so good. In my Extended Inquiry Project, I used every bit of SLO's I could! Knowledge of Conventions, I went through my EIP several times to make sure there were no grammar or spelling errors, I also was very aware of how organized I kept all my writing throughout the EIP, and it flowed together as well! The Process of Composition, I used this myself in my own EIP as well as in class! In my EIP, The Process of Composition SLO was a huge part! Of course, I went through this project about a billion times changing how I worded things, added things, cut things, etc. I used The Process of Composition in class as well when Mr. Cary had us go around the room and look at everyone's EIP's at that moment and give them advice! As well as look to help your own EIP as well. I used Critical Reflection when it came to looking at my research and having to incorporate as much as possible with keeping people's attention, as well as making sure my information was 100% true! I used Rhetorical Knowledge when it came to being aware of my audience and how to attract my audience's attention. I lastly used Critical Reading to conduct my inquiry for this project, and it is a big part of my EIP. Without any Readings, my EIP project would be absolutely nothing. With the work of all SLO's, I successfully made an Extended Inquiry Project that made it past the four walls of UNC Charlotte and I could not be more proud of anything as I am with this EIP.

Blog Post #1 - What is Academic Writing?

Reflect, Explain, Situate:
On one of the first days of class, Mr. Cary, had us read a short little story on what true academic writing really is. He then proceeded to ask us the question after reading the piece, 'What is "Academic" Writing?' We were to answer this question on our UWRT blogs. And truthfully, before reading that awesome writing piece that Mr. Cary had us read, I would have never been able to write as well as I did in this particular blog post, especially about writing in academic form!
Papers in school have always been extremely difficult for me, not because I could not write but because I did not know what the teacher wanted me to write. Sadly, it was not always that clear in middle and high school, so I almost always made such awful grades on papers. These bad grades knocked so much of my confidence down in the ground because I just felt as if I could not write and I just simply was not good enough to write. College and UWRT particularly, proved my own self very wrong. Honestly, ever since I came to college, my writing has improved so much, even since first semester, I would even go as far to say it is a miracle. I appreciate the little tasks that Mr. Cary had us do throughout the semester, because looking back on them now-- they are the reason I can write in confidence now and just let the juices flow!

Blog Post #2 - My Writing Process

SLO Reflection/Discussion:
This blog post is basically a big SLO in itself. First and foremost, it is clear from the start that The Process of Composition is pretty much what this entire blog post is about! It is about having to always being aware of my process of composition at any point and time during my writing, so I can recognize what I am doing and try to help myself when I notice my writing getting a little out of whack. Before this semester, I could not tell you what kind of writer I was for the life of me, and now I have this blog post! This blog post also ties into Knowledge of Conventions. Knowledge of Conventions and The Process of Composition are two very similar SLO's in my eye. They are not the same, clearly, but I do not believe you could have one without having the other. With this being said, Knowledge of Conventions ties into this blog post because, well, it is a blog post! The formality of this writing is very informal, and I am basically talking to myself in the blog post anyways. Because I am aware of the formality of the writing and how to casually write, this makes writing so much easier on me. I do not have to sit back and think for twenty minutes on how I should approach the actual writing, I just know now. This is a result of all the assignments we did this semester that tied into these SLO's.
