I believe that inspiration is possibly one of, if not, the most important value for most artists. And although some may not consider me an artist, I do still have a strong sense of care and passion for the inspirations in my life that guide my experiences. Inspiration shows up in just about everything I do. It also shows up in a beautiful plethora of different forms. I think my number one form of inspiration comes from people. It comes from my family and friends, the ones I look up to, people I admire, people I work with, even people I see in passing. People are the reason I decided to pursue this art form and continue to be the thing that affects most of my artmaking and process. As a stage manager, one of my biggest inspirations is world renowned stage manager and producer, Cody Renard Richard. His versatility and range is something I admire profoundly and I often find myself thinking about how I can become more like him in the future. I also get inspiration from probably every form of art that one could imagine. I pride myself on being someone who likes to constantly consume art, and not only consume it but talk about it and create around it. I love to read books, watch films, listen to music, paint and draw, dance and do just about anything actionable that is related to art. What I like about art and what I do is that I have the space to be inspired by just about anything and to be able to not limit myself to just one genre, thing, or art form. My biggest value about what I do and plan to do in the future is that I am interested in trying everything. I want to work in dance, theater, opera, circus, music, film, culture, language, video, technology, radio and everything in between.

As a theater-maker whose primary job is to work with people and to communicate with others, I firmly believe that we should always find more time to learn about each other’s backgrounds and the life experiences that have made us who we are. I think we should share some of these things especially with potential collaborators, primarily because it may inform our collaboration styles and because it makes a space for such collaborators to be comfortable and safe with each other, something that I find is integral to an effective collaboration. With that being said, here are some things that inform my overall life experience and the way in which I collaborate with others.

I always tell people that the main thing that drives my interests and motivation is culture. I love my job because I love working with people, more specifically working with all types of people that come from different backgrounds. I have grown up with a large family and multiple different cultures that define who I am and what I’ve learned about the world. My family is almost completely Brazilian, I speak Portuguese fluently and I visit the country once or twice every year. My dad’s side is originally Italian immigrants who came to Brazil, my mom’s parents teach Italian in Brazil and I have Italian citizenship. I was born in Shanghai, China, moved to the U.S. when I was three years old and so far have lived in two wildly different states. My mom speaks six languages and I speak three. If you want to work with me, I strongly suggest being prepared for how much you might hear me talk about languages and the world. I would also suggest being eager to teach me about any other world or traveling experiences that you might have stored in your brain.

Another large part of my world includes a lot of queer experiences. I believe that art would not be art without some sort of queer or LGBTQ+ influence. Being a queer artist can be hard, but it has also shaped me as a person. I believe that all types of love and human connection are beautiful, and I would like to work with people who feel similarly. The concept of queer joy is one of the biggest influences on my life today and on my art and interests. I hope that the world can share this sentiment with me and be similarly influenced and inspired by this view.

This year, my aspirations and goals changed a lot. I have realized that they are constantly changing and that is something I have come to welcome and accept. Everytime I meet someone new in this field, I find something new to add to things that I want to accomplish and work on. The area of technical theater is something that is full of new and exciting things and challenges. It is such a beautiful mix of art and labor and practicality and challenge. Every time I work on something new, I develop a new mindset that helps with creativity and motivation for what I might work on in the future that might be related to that project. First and foremost, I want to be a creator that is well rounded. I want to be able to work in multiple different fields and be someone who is skilled in more than just one thing. There seems to be a weird pressure to be extremely skilled in only one thing and nothing else, especially within this field. While that can be advantageous, I am more interested in learning more about other things. If I am already good at one thing, why not learn about something else and work my way to be good at that other thing as well? I believe that will make me more marketable and it will be much more enriching and enjoyable for myself. I am someone who loves to learn and grow. For me, it is what makes my life interesting and fun.

Some things that I am interested in include: Integrated media and projections, lighting design, sound design, production and stage management, scenic painting and artistry, live music management and design, dance, opera, and more related fields. I want to expand my knowledge of technical theater and grow into the type of artist that I aspire to be and admire.
