-Turn to page 237 & read the introduction to The Canterbury Tales.

-I will split you into three groups & assign you a specific character to read about.

-In each of your character's section, answer these questions:

What are some adjectives and descriptive language that Chaucer uses to describe your character? What do those words mean? (Write at least words/phrases)
Decide if Chaucer approves or disapproves of your character. How did you come to this conclusion? Use evidence from the text, including the words he uses to show this.

After we have discussed this as a class, answer these two questions on the Google form and turn them in before you leave.

Which of these characters does Chaucer seem to disapprove of? How can you tell?
What qualities do the knight and the plowman have in common? How do they show these qualities?

Some adjectives were generous, courteous, distinguished, chivalry, honest and noble. The knights were honorable men in the Middle Ages.

Chaucer describes the Merchant by writing about his forked beard, colorful dress, and beaver hat. He also uses rhymes and describes his personality. These words show that the merchant dressed in colorful clothes and was an intelligent person.
Chaucer approves of the character, we came to this conclusion because Chaucer writes many positive things about the merchant. Evidence for this is "He was an expert at currency exchange" and "high on his horse he sat."
