He is too tough , too cool and too scary for almost anybody to hang out with. He starts by bullying Russell and even punching him - twice! Russell describes it as, "A bone-bashing fist hit my face"(44). However, after other kids start sharing their bullying stories Richie realizes his mistakes. Next time Russell got picked on by tough kids that are still smaller than Richie, Richie decides to stand up for him. Richie tells the kids, "2 against 1. I'm thinking it would be even more fun if it was 2 against 2"(97). After Richie threatens to fight the bullies, they never pick on Russell again. Since this book was made in the early 2000s, it's like an early version of schoology. The new foreign student Catalina was getting bullied, so she decided to send a letter with her life story out on KidNet so people would understand her and her background. The bullying stopped, and she even got a little bit popular. Catalina says, “‘I’m glad that people read it...I’m glad those girls wanted to say they liked it’”(95). After that happened other kids sent their stories with bullying out on the network, and their problems suddenly stopped. Russell is a kind kid who is bullied at his school, Parkland Middle School. Even the cool kids have huge flaws, but they are still accepted. One flaw he had is that he feels bad for snitching on the bullies. He tells his mom, “‘Don’t call. Don’t do anything’”(45). However, Russell is willing to take action as long as it leaves the bullies names out, which greatly helps the cause and is a good side of Russell. The character Russell is shown to have good traits as well as flaws to show he is the same as everyone else, just misunderstood.

At Parkland Middle School Richie is the tough guy. He is too cool and too strange and scary for anyone else to hang out with. Richie decides his next victim he’ll bully will be Russell, a main character. One of their interactions turns violent and Russell recollects that he “just watched his[Richie’s] first drive into my stomach”(7). He later says, “Well, that was it. That was enough. I had to do something”(16). Russell didn’t have that many friends, but he was getting completely abused. If it weren’t for Richie, he probably wouldn’t have gone to make a helpline for other kids getting picked on. His motivations were completely changed from just trying to survive in middle school to making a change. The minor character, Richie, helps influence the main characters and the plot.

She decides to write a false story about herself and drop it off anonymously so that the revealers (Elliot, Russell and Catalina) post it, so in the end she can prove the story wrong. Her plan somehow succeeds, and Bethany gets her dad who's and attorney threatens the school for the harm it caused her. The principal backs down and shuts down KidNet. Elliott is constantly picked on and has gotten used to it. Some people feel bad for him, but no one helped him out. Russell says that Elliot is “one kid who it’s okay for anybody, absolutely anybody to trash? In our school, that last kid was Elliot”(17). Russell also tells the reader, “I had seen a lot of stuff happen to him”(17). It really helps the reader understand the issue of the book when the issue is personified. Elliot is made fun of, teased and abused, and no one does anything about in. In the book the main characters mostly fit the nerd stereotype, and people like Bethany DeMere fit the bully stereotype. Bethany is mean to the nerd stereotyped kids, and Russell admits, “She’s popular, and she’s one of those people who knows just what to say to cut you down”(28). Russell also notices, “no matter who you were, Elliot Gekewicz was lower on the social scale than you”(17). The author uses stereotypes so readers can relate them to the people that are known in real life. Another thing the stereotypes help with is so we can group people together. Bethany can be grouped as a mean girl and popular kid, and Elliot is a nerd that no one likes. One of the main characters, Catalina, says, “‘I’m glad that people read it”’ and “‘I’m glad those girls wanted to say they liked it’”(95). This proves the theme that in life if people don’t understand others, the best thing to do is let them know the person's story and where they're from.
