1) How is this theme explored in the Merchant of Venice?

Humanity is explored in the Merchant of Venice through the portrayal of the human condition. Ultimately, the play explores the idea that the human condition relies heavily on varying changes in behaviour. The theme is also explored in the Merchant of Venice through the portrayal of religious and social inequality, where some individuals are represented as inhumane and the whole idea of qualifying as a human relies heavily on Christian orientation. This engages with the idea of religious prejudice and a lack of religious empathy for others.

" This quote explores the idea of racial inequality, and is an eloquent plea for human recognition. Act 3, Scene 1.

" If I could bid the fifth welcome with so good
heart as I can bid the other four farewell, I should
be glad of his approach.

Character like Antonio, Shylock, Bassanio, and Portia all represent the theme of humanity. Throughout the entire play, Shylock is seen as a animal and not respected as a human. He is rejected and closed off from society due to his race by a variety of main characters. This causes Shylock to act in the way he does.
