However, as the film progresses, so does Jeffs relationships, and so his perception of women changes, and their strengths and capabilities are exposed, Hitchcock arguing that if Jeff is able to change his perceptions of women, then perhaps it is possible for society to do the same.

Throughout the beginning of the film, Lisa is constructed as being materialistic and wealthy. This is done through misc en scene such as costume. She is shown in an array of different dresses accompanied with pearl necklaces which create a wealthy seeming character. This is reinforced through the use of dialogue when Jeff describes her as "never wearing the same dress twice". This is later contradicted in the film when she makes the daring choice to sneak into Thorwald's apartment. In this scene, she is filmed in a wide shot, which aims to showcase both her character and the surrounding environment. The audience is able to observe her in the apartment from Jeff's point of view which conveys Hitchcock's message that appearance is not a true indication of who someone is.
Indie G
