discussion
i) There are pros and cons taking energy drinks. Energy drinks can improve a person's mood and attitude. It contains the combination of sugar and caffeine which can give you a boost in energy. When you're energized, you'll feel like you can do any task effectively. However, energy drinks can become very addictive, especially for children. The negative points in taking energy drinks are that it can cause cardiovascular problems and weight gain as it is high in calories. According to the Journal of the American Heart Association “It could actually be playing some nasty tricks on our hearts, leading to emergency room visits and even death.” If a person is not careful, excessively gulping energy drinks can lead to risky consequences.

ii) In my opinion, I highly agree that energy drinks should be banned for Malaysians under the age of 18. This is because energy drinks pose a risk of caffeine toxicity when consumed by some young people, and there is evidence of other troubling physiological and behavioral effects associated with their consumption by youth. To support this, a study mentioned that researchers in Iceland surveyed 7,400 adolescents (age 14 and 15 years) and found that the majority reported consuming caffeine on a typical day and that caffeine intake (primarily from soda and energy drinks) was related to daytime sleepiness and anger for both sexes.

Discussion:
i) What are the arguments for and against taking energy drinks?
Children tend to follow what the parents do. As example, when they see the father taking energy drink, they might think, one day they will be drinking it. Do children ever wonder that consuming energy drink is safe and good for you health? No. It does not contain any benefits for your lives. Energy drinks advertisement are spreading lies to people by telling them it would help them gaining more energy for workouts and put you on alert mode. The truth about ienergy drinks is it only contain caffeine and sugar in higher volume. In addition, it never contains vitamins as stated in the advertisements. Higher intake of caffeine can cause caffeine intoxication which can lead to disrupted sleeping patterns, excessive shaking, vomitting due to dizziness, increase blood pressure and heart beat, and many more. What about sugar? It can cause a lot more trouble such as obesity and it increase the volume of sugar in blood which is not good for diabetic patients. Therefore, it is better to take precaution step to avoid any health complications.

ii) In your opinion, should energy drinks be banned for Malaysians under the age of 18? (Support your answer with evidence from research).
In my opinion, energy drinks should be banned in Malaysia for children below the age of 18. According to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) (2015), children and adolescent should take at least 3 mg/kg of caffeine in a day which is less than 180 mg per day (Passmore, Kondowe & Johnston, 1987). It is due to higher intake of caffeine can cause dehydration in children and adolescents as more water will be taken out from the body through urination. If the underage children are taught drinking tea and coffee at a younger age, then it is safe to say that never let them taking any energy drinks as they gain enough caffeine in those drinks. Caffeine also can be found in chocolate, which is the favourites of the kids. We should supervise our children food and drink intake ever since young so that, they gain a good nutrients for the living. According Marie Claire Dorking (2019), Dr Diana Gall (n.d.) states too much caffeine in food and drinks for the children and adolescents can cause lack of sensitivity, changes in sleeping patterns and increase their heart rate. If they are continuously consuming more caffeine per day, it can lead to heart problem, in which can develop another disorder such as anxiety disorder due to the fast heart rate. On the other hand, consuming energy drinks increases the sugar in blood which is bad for your health. For underage children, higher intake of sugar per day can lead them to obesity. Children in modern era are no longer exercising their body physically. They do exercise by playing their fingers on smart phones days and nights. It is unacceptable for parents to neglect their children needs so, it is advised that parents should control their food intake and at the same time promote a healthy lifestyle.

i) What are the arguments for and against taking energy drinks?

Many organization had proposed that the energy drinks should be banned to the young people that the energy drinks contain high level of sugar and caffeine that could affects the young people's health. Energy drinks should not be banned to the young people, the current research on the danger of energy drink to the young people is insufficient to prove that it is really bring a negative impact towards the health of the young people. Many sources did mentioned that the energy drink contain high level of the sugar and it may cause heart disease or obesity to the young people. There is no denying the fact that there are some energy drinks contain a lot of sugar, but what about those energy drinks that contain low sugar and caffeine? According to the Food Navigator, a can of 250ml Reb Bull contain 28grams of sugar (11grams per 100ml) while the 330ml Pepsi having 36grams of sugar in it (11grams per 100ml), the sugar content is the same but why the energy drink should be banned while the Pepsi still can be sold to every people?
