The age is different because girls develop earlie. You then double that measurement and find out your future height. If you need braces then they measure your hand which shows future body growth (jaw). You can find out your height from this too. not sure how but its possible

If you measure the height of a boy when he is 2 years old the double that measurement it should give a rough estimate of his adult height. The reason why you measure a girls height sooner than the boys height is because girl develop fast than boys do.
