Mist and Flowers-in-the-Sun have different opinions on the Earthers who seem to want to change their ways. This includes making English a requirement for jobs, socializing, and more. "'Those who get the implants grow richer and stranger,' the old man continued. 'Sad it is, but true" (McDonnell).

Speaking and hearing are qualities of Earthers. The process of being able to speak and hear is a skin-cutting surgery that goes against policy. For Mist, this is unholy, but her daughter undergoes the procedure. Aseem, too, struggles with language when meeting the girl from the future who speaks of Lower Delhi. "He's never heard of Naya Diwas Lane, or Neechi Dilli. New Day Lane? Lower Delhi? What strange names" (Singh).

The Earthers arrive on Mist's home planet and have issues with it, such as it being too loud, and cannot understand the people. They find a solution by implementing a surgery to allow those who undergo it the ability to speak and hear, vastly different from the unspoken sign language they do. Their arrival impacts the planet. "'Already the children of our village no longer dance to the light at our festivals. They insist on 'Sound- dances; preferring 'music' to light. They hide their natures, clans, and status'" (McDonnell).

Mist fears the loss of culture and the impact the Earthers will have on her people and planet. Additionally, Aseem has accepted his life and knows he must continue to live.
