Field Experience Reflection

Based on my Field Experience I think that I have mainly seen Language as a Resource and a Problem. For instance, when I worked with an English Language Learner I found the power of learning two languages within students. While interviewing a student, I found his appreciation for learning English and embracing Spanish within his educational life. He expressed to me that he definitely does struggle with understanding concepts but he likes being in touch with his hispanic heritage. Another observation previously, that showed me it as a problem is when I had was when a student was instructed to no longer use his phone to translate information to him therefore effecting the pace of his work. He expressed to me that it caused him to turn in work late and was a hurdle in understanding other concepts.

Perspective as a Future Educator

Based on my own opinion, I would like to enforce language as a resource because of how it can effect others. I think that language is important towards others and allowing people to learn from one another. As a future educator I want to be able to enforce a positive outlook on language for my future student. I believe that every student needs to be aware of and understand the position language holds in shaping identity, culture, and connection. By treating language as a valuable resource, I hope to create a classroom where students feel proud of their languages, open to learning new ones, and respectful of linguistic diversity.
