Ethan Frome's romance with Zeena destroys him, but once he and Mattie confess their mutual love, he still can't fully attain happiness due to the accident. This is a tragic ending, and leads to why we see this novella as realistic; neither of the featured romances were ever developed past Ethan's imagination.

Mattie is vivacious and lively, and brings another persona to Ethan. Before, Zeena acted as an oppressor and Ethan felt stuck in his marriage because Zeena never wanted to be happy. However, although these romances never lasted they were a main focus of the plot, which is why this is considered a Realist piece of literature.
