The beginning of the Cyprus territory dispute begins with the Cyprus Island separation from the United Kingdom and its gain of independence in 1960. This region is home to both ethnic Greek and Turkish Cypriots and was created into a partnership agreement after the split. Ultimately, problems would be created for desired power and control of the region.

The Cypriot President Archbishop Makarios III wanted to alter the existing constitution. To do this, Turkish Cypriots were expelled from the government. This led to immense intercommunal violence outbursts. Ultimately, in 1964, the United Nations created the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus, also known as the (UNFICYP). This was a special program to prevent further violence or political separation between the different ethnic groups. This political stalemate led on until 1974.

Following this, in August of 1974, the Turkish military began making leaps in the process of attaining more land. specifically, they had gained a third of the territory. Because of this, a ceasefire was negotiated and politics became seemingly physical. For example, thousands of Turkish Cypriots fled North, while Greek Cypriots fled to the South. This as based off their differentiating ethnicities.

Following this, around the mid 1980's, Turkey used its militaristic powers to claim the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). They now claimed this small region of the land as their own, with sovereignty. However, Turkey is the one and only country that recognizes and acknowledges the independence of the region.

Now, in current times, the relations are still uneasy. The ethnic groups of both the Greek and Turkish Cypriots want the rights to the region. Since the recent negotiations in 2014, the main issues relate to the ability to exercise political power, property, territory, security relations, and of course the access to valuable resources in the Mediterranean Sea. Both groups want to be able to use the resources for their own economic ventures and have full sovereignty of the land.
