Project D: Commerical Guide “ The Talk”

The ‘Talk’, is an ad created by the company P&G which shows the harsh reality of racism in America from certain points in time. The commercial starts with a mother and daughter, are in a room getting ready and the daughter informs the mother about the odd compliment she received. As the commercial goes on we encounter a mother who has had a talk with their children about the reality of the world they live in. Each time skip we get granted a new reason for the ‘talk’ but the motive behind the talk is the same for the child to understand that they are: beautiful, intelligent, strong, and brave. The mother character throughout each point in time are women who all align with Second-wave and Third-wave Feminism. Second-Wave feminism is “ The focus on the goals of equal rights and opportunities for women and men”(Sellnow). Someone of the mothers had male-gendered children and they explained the importance of understanding. The reason for some people name-calling or harassing you is because of their insecurities. Third-Wave feminism “focuses not only on women’s issues but also on a variety of standpoints. Standpoints are essentially our understanding of the world as shaped by where we are situated with it ( our life experiences) based on class, gender, race, and sexual identity(Sellnow). The mothers all explain to their children that just because it is unfair does not mean that I give them a reason to hate us, we must strive to be better is the underlying premise. Another key thing that we see as the ad progress on each woman begins to more align with the ‘Liberal Feminist Perspective’, which focuses primarily on providing opportunities for the inclusion of women in traditionally male-dominated areas. The fact that the ‘talk’ is being delivered to a young boy by strong women goes to show the importance of both roles women and men play in the lives of younger children.
