The creation of overseas trade between Britain and the colonies directly impacted a change in colonial America’s economy. They now had access to raw materials, specifically tobacco, which was considered a cash crop and heightened the economy and the balance of trade. The American-grown goods became incredibly popular in Britain, furthering the economic bond between the two countries. America became wealthy from this economic trade, and was able to pursue more expansion and development. The colonies began to take on a more industrial economy, specifically on the East Coast, focused on production and exports. The Boston Harbor fostered trade with other countries, and began to expand trade. Expansion of overseas trade proved vital for America’s economic development because it allowed America to not be as reliant on Britain’s support.

The King implementing taxes played a big role in the colonies wanting to separate into their own government. The colonists were paying the British debts after the French and Indian War, despite having no say in these taxes being passed. The King would not allow for the colonies to have representation in the parliament. In response to this frustration towards the parliament, colonists started to boycott items being taxed, such as sugar and tea. Although these protests and boycotts were effective in getting the Stamp Act revoked, the tensions between the colonists and the parliament ultimately rose, and the colonists continued to want to separate into their own democracy.

Along with individual freedom being a cause for the American Revolution, the desire for the rebirth of a republican government in America motivated the people to fight. Throughout the Revolutionary War, Britain acted as the government of the former colonies, now states, even though they did not have the legal authority to do so. They enforced unjust laws such as the Homestead Act, Townshend Acts and Coercive Acts which all negatively impacted the Americans in numerous ways. This lack of power in their own nation increased their yearning for a republic government. In addition, British leaders made extreme decisions such as regulating imperial trade and navigation, which tightened their control over the empire. The Americans were also forced to pay revenue to the British. The inability to control their own foreign exchange and revenue sparked the flame of revolution in the Americans to fight for a republican government. Overall, the need for republican government that was taken away from the British led the Americans into the Revolutionary War.

After evaluating the causes of the start of an independent democracy in the colonies, it is determined that overall, taxes imposed on the colonists were most important in bringing about the complete separation from the British. Specifically, the introduction of the Intolerable Acts brought about a distinct feeling of discontempt from the colonists, with these taxes being passed, and making the lives of the colonists a lot more difficult. British taxes like the Tea and stamp act were taking so much money from the colonists that poverty was a common instance, and it became more difficult for the colonists to enjoy simple luxuries. What these basically did was put taxes on Tea and Stamps which were commonly used items in the colonies, so this resulted in a more difficult way of living for the colonists. Simple acts of control such as these are what drove Americans to want to be a separate independent nation with their own freely run government and freedom over buying simple items without overpaying. The colonists really felt as if the government was trying to reinstate more control over the colonies, and their anger for paying more taxes on these simple items was what influenced their reaction.

The boston massacre, oft sighted as one of the biggest contributors to the revolutionary war, was a protest over british taxes. The colonists, angered by the navigation act that limited colony exports to the British exclusively, took up arms and started haggling British guards. This riot led to the shooting of 5 colonists and the propagandizing of the British as tyrannical dictators that would expand outside of boston and take over the americas. This Propagandizing is what led to the formation of the continental congress and later the continental army. Although this was not the main cause of self revolutionary ideals, this was an important event in influencing british colonists to rise up.

The event that caused the greatest reaction from the colonists towards British imperial authority were the taxes imposed on the colonies due to the debt Great Britain was suffering after the French and Indian war. The first tax that was imposed on the colonists was the Stamp Act, which was a direct tax on any official documents. As a result, colonists felt they were being taxed without representation, leading to boycotts, secret societies, and rallies. Another Act that was passed was the Tea Act, blocking the colonies from importing teas from companies other than from the British East India company. Colonists were outraged and protested by throwing British tea into the Atlantic ocean, best known as the Boston Tea Party. The British felt targeted by this so they passed the Townshend Act, taxing all non-British goods going into the American colonies. The northern merchants relied on non-British imports to make money and saw this Act as an abuse of power. Despite propaganda influencing the colonists' reaction, their hostilities towards Great Britain was due to these harsh economic restrictions imposed with no representation from the colonies.

The most impactful factor that influenced American colonial reaction to the British imperial authority was Enlightenment. The ideas of Enlightenment surged as the French and Indian war commenced in 1754. Enlightenment supported natural rights such as freedom of speech, equality, freedom of the press, and religious tolerance. The colonists were not receiving the natural rights from the British imperial authority that they believed they deserved. In turn, tension grew between the colonists and the British. The colonists rebelled against specific acts such as the Tea Act and the Stamp Act where they threw tea into the Boston harbor and boycotted British goods. This reaction to British control ultimately caused the American Revolutionary War.

The French and Indian war was the leading cause of the colonists' desire for Revolution. This war built up debt in Britain forcing the colonies to pay, instead of Britain facing their own consequences from the war. The colonists were now taxed on British goods. The townshend acts passed by the British parliament in 1767 had initiated taxes on glass, paper, and lead. It was viewed by the colonists as an abuse of power by the British since they had no representation in Parliament. These tax laws, such as the stamp act,the townshend act, and the tea act, led to widespread riots and boycotting British goods, making it clear that the colonists wanted their own control over their territories. All other causes could stem back and show the French and Indian war as the key factor in causing the colonies desire to become seperate for Britain.
