Areas of innovation in rehearsal space

Valerie:

We thought something was missing from the percussion during Valerie, and decided to add beads to the drum symbols, creating a high-pitched rattle on hit.

During the first verse, rather than strumming chords I tastefully arpeggiate to compliment the piano and create a strong distinction between a chilled verse and more intense chorus, where I begin strumming along with the keys. During the second verse, keys drop down as I strum to fill the rhythm, creating a dynamic feel to the song as there is a clear difference in verse-chorus structure. I used quite a tinny tone for this, using the bridge pickup on my guitar and turning treble up on the amp.

Easy:

During the verses I play licks in between vocal phrases, filling the space. Later on, I crank up the gain and play a guitar solo.

The One:

I pick through guitar triads during the verses, accenting the chords being played by the keyboard, before opening up the song when the chorus hits by strumming the chords, thickening up the sound of the song. I used a rich, mid-heavy tone here.

Untitled:

The process of writing the song was innovation. Adding keys and a sax line where the lead guitar was originally meant to be. The song later dissolves into a rubato jazzy section, where the guitar and saxophone take centre stage to create a spacey, trippy, airy feeling. I play this song finger style, which is not typical for electric guitar.
