Prior to the 1400s, the Osage Indians lived in what is now Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. Not much about them was recorded until they were discovered in 1673 by explorers from France. In 1808, the US government started taking away their land. Because of this, a reservation was formed for the Osage Indians in 1825 in Southern Kansas. They were also relocated to Oklahoma where they can still be found living today.

The Osage Indians farmed, foraged, and hunted. They hunted animals such as bear, bison, deer, and elk. The Osage people also traded with the Europeans and other Indians in order to get the supplies they needed. Their clothing was made of deer skin, bear skin, and buffalo. Both clothing and food for the Osage Indians could come from certain animals. They lived in tepees constructed from buffalo hides. The Osage Indians put to use almost every part of some animals such as the buffalo or deer, using the meat for food, skins for clothing, shoes, and housing, and other parts for various things.

In 1746, there was a huge conflict with the Pawnee and Comanche tribes. The Osage tribe also defeated the Caddo tribes, gaining dominance in the Great Plains region. During the year of 1833, the Osage massacred 150 people of the Kiowa tribe by the Wichita Mountains. It seems like the Osage people were brave and warlike, liked their power, and were not afraid to take action and people’s lives, including those of other native american tribes. They fought to prove their courage, rather than for territory, land, or other concrete things.

The chiefs of the Osages had the most responsibilities and power and were chosen by the tribal council. There were two chiefs per band and were picked from the men of particular clans or families. Soldiers also had power and were expected to deal with daily problems and lead the hunts along with the chiefs. Also in the Osage tribe were elders who had the right to perform religious and ancestral rituals.

The religion of the Osage Indians was pantheistic. They believed that everything happened certain force in the universe called Wa-kon-tah. Never quite fully understanding how the force itself worked, they believed that some people could turn themselves into animals. These beliefs helped shape how the Osage Indians lived because they were very superstitious and would often worship and talk to the “spirits”.
