Basquiat was an American artist with Haitian and PuertoRican ascendancy. He was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1960. He was a self-taught artist and collaborated with Andy Warhol during the 80's.

Basquiat included a crown in some of his paintings, which was a way of "celebrating Black people as majestic royalty or deeming them as saints".

By the mid-80's he had an excessive use of drugs. He became paranoid and isolated himself for periods of time. He died due to an overdose on 1988 in New York City.

I think this work of art shows the world of art during the 60's, 70's, and 80's, because it was a time when new art currents were emerging, such as Neo-expressionism. It was a moment when, thanks to the social state of the world, new ideas and traditions were appearing on scene.

The psychedelic style was present in art during the decade. The public was more open to new and more liberal forms of art, and due to globalization, art quickly propagated through the world.

Minorities had an increasingly bigger participation in art, especially in painting, which had been very restricted until that point.

In addition, during this time, the use of drugs among artists was very common. Not only in painting, but also in music. In fact, many artists died due to an excessive abuse of substances.
