- Personal engagement
- Background information
Source 1. bandgap of PV cells, different types of photovoltaic cells
Source 2. how PV cells work - converts light into electricity through the photovoltaic effect. Silicon is a giant network covalent solid where one atom forms 4 bonds with surrounding silicon atoms, this structure is non-conductive. In a PV cell, there are two layers of silicon, a N-type silicon and a P-type silicon. The N-type silicon contains phosphorus atoms with 5 valence electrons, thus, there are delocalized electrons that is mobile. The P-type silicon contains boron with 3 valence electrons, indicating that there is 1 electron “hole” for every boron atom. As the layers are stacked on top of each other, a depletion region is created when electrons from N-side moves to the P-side, and there are no delocalized electron in this region. Finally, an electric field is created when the N-side becomes positively charged and the P-side becomes negatively charged.
