Albert Bandura Cognitive Theory:

Jean Piaget was the first to develop cognitive theories in psychology and also focused on how Schemas affect our learning and motivation. The schema being a framework used to interpret the world around us. A schema is made up of past experiences but can also be changed as we learn and adapt. Our thoughts can focus on positive feelings, leading to positive behaviour and producing a positive outcome. So it is important to reframe our thoughts, to focus on the positive. If you tell yourself you will fail, most likely you will fail, but focusing on the positive can lead to positive outcomes. By changing negative thoughts to positive, we can increase motivation.

By observation, learners can aquire new knowledge. Motivation plays a role in whether the behaviour is adopted or not. By surrounding yourself with positive influences of friends and family and also a social network that shares your passion helps increase motivation. As an online student, it may require more effort but the positive effects on motivation are worth it.

A theory that emphasizes looking at the whole person, the uniqueness of everyone and that we have free will and are motivated to achieve our potential. In 1943 Abraham Maslow coined humanistic theory and his hierarchy is one of the best theories on motivation. His theory states that our actions are motivated by certain physiological and psychological needs progressing from basic to complex. Maslow's hierarchy is a 5 tier model in the shape of a pryamid, starting at the bottom, physiological, safety, love and belonging, esteem, and self actualization. With deficiency needs such as food and water being met before growth needs. Deficiency needs becoming stronger the longer they are unmet, and growth needs are reached through intellectual and creative behaviours.

Identify which theory you think would be most helpful in maintaining your motivation:

I chose cognitive Theory. This theory appealed to me because I am guilty of focusing on the negative. The idea that we can change our schema by focusing on positive thoughts leading to better behaviour and better motivation is impossible to me. The moment I tell myself I cannot do something, that is when I can't. But if I stay focused on the positive, focusing on the bigger picture and positive ideas, my motivation will increase and I will become a more successful online student.

By focusing on the positive and learning from what I did wrong I can improve and adjust.

By seeing the value in my tasks, this will also be a good motivator. By understanding these lessons are an important building block to my education. I can feel more positive about completing tasks, even if they don't seem important or relevant, just knowing each task successfully completed is one step closer to my goal is important.
