IS EDUCATION AS WELFARE POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE? (Question #2) by Barry Goldenberg

Katz does make the argument that the U.S. is unique in how its public education system has developed. Regardless of if you think the U.S. system is welfare, do you think education, and our schools specifically, *should* be welfare? Why or why not? (Or, put more simply, do you think that is a productive part American society or something that is problematic that education *is* or *is not* welfare?

Schools help lift the burden students may face at home and in their personal lives by offering basic food needs and clubs. For some students, they may not have sufficient food at home, and so the free lunches they get at school may be the only source of nutrition they get in a day. This also helps the parents, who may be busy working to not have time to prepare meals for their child. Also, schools offer various clubs that positively impact the child. The child can enter clubs that meet their interest, and expand their curiosity into their future career. Clubs offered are entirely free, so there is no barrier for low income students to explore this opportunity.
- Mona Takuma, Kyle Noah Kim, Ashanti Lexia Banos, and Wei Huang

With a large majority of the population having attended some form of schooling, we can insure that the majority is receiving the benefits they need to become a contributor to society, a goal that schools were actually created for. By providing the assistance that is needed through the outlet of something which almost every single individual can relate to, we can ensure that we are actively engaging in ways to help anyone in need. By being a system of welfare, positive results are bound to happen since basic needs are being provided, allowing for students to then focus on schooling for their own individual success as well.
- Bilal Rubani, Yanni He, Hedi Landa, Ran Xiang

Although they have many similarities, schools are something that is seen as a right for U.S. citizens. Additionally, when tying in welfare to anything, you are creating a way for this to be challenged and taken away. This would be very problematic if this happened to schools. Though public schools are funded by tax payer money, they are also government funded to make it available to all eligible citizens. Therefore, even though schools offer things such as supplies, meals, and transportation, it should be classified as separate from welfare.
- Marilyn Renee Hamm, Paw Wah, Teresa Chihuahua, Mia Julianna Montijo

While we think that schools being under local jurisdiction is a major factor in widening the gap between lower-income and wealthier communities in the big picture, it's ultimately a positive that education is a welfare program. It allows poorer families to be able to access education for their children without having to risk their finances that they would need for necessities. Because education is welfare, it creates (some form of) standard for all citizens. This improves society as a whole if people are not entirely excluded from the opportunity to learn because of their socioeconomic situation. While there are problems about inequities in education that still need to be addressed, if education wasn't under welfare, there would be an even greater divide. - Ashley Lopresto, Hana Cho, Cong Zhao, Mingyang Yi

Schools being welfare is something that is positive because of its availability to everyone. It is able to give an opportunity to every child to grasp their basic education skills. There is a sort of equal opportunity that comes from public schools because there is no issue with money in order for students to gain their education. They are also positive because of their ability to provide many different things, even nutrition, and food to many students.
-Daisy Phung

I think it is a positive thing that education to be welfare. Some students are eager to study, but they have to give up due to family financial reasons. Social welfare can solve this problem well so that many students have the opportunity to receive an education. Social welfare also promotes social mobility. Many children from low-income families have the ability to make a difference through education. After studying, many of them work very hard and have good jobs and incomes. They change their class successfully.

-Jiaxin Tao

I think education as welfare is positive. It is now obvious that education is essential for the development of a country. Education as welfare provides children from poor families opportunities. As more and more people get educated, society can be better with a lower crime rate and higher productivity. Though the quality of education cannot be equally provided to everyone, it is still a great offer that can help many communities and families.
- Yuchen Wang

I think it is great for underprivileged kids since they now will have access to free education. It is beneficial for their families since schools can provide a number of services, such as food, health care, and counseling, which will lessen their burdens. In the long run, turning schools into welfare can solve the education problem and narrow the gap between social classes.

-Jing Zhang
