After examining Nanny's challenges, I can understand that she is a traumatized and unyielding character. Janie is being forced to live the life she desires by Nanny. Nanny has high hopes for Janie's marriage and subsequent status as a respectable wife. She doesn't want Janie to be remembered as an unmarried mother of a child, as she used to be. Nanny appears to prioritize this objective above all else, and in her efforts to find Janie a good husband, she ignores Janie's needs. Nanny's definition of a good life is based on middle-class values and financial security. She knows she won't be able to fulfill this ambition in her lifetime, so she forces it on Janie by forcing her to marry a well-known landowner. Janie's resentment towards her Nanny is understandable. She despises her grandma for instilling in her a distorted ideology that prioritizes materialism and social standing. Janie recognizes that she was trained to prioritize money and reputation. Pre-arranged marriages, in my opinion, did not work back then and do not work now. Because of Logan Killicks' financial security, Nanny arranges Janie's marriage to him in the novel. Logan was everything Janie despised in a man, which Nanny failed to notice. Janie felt used, abused, and unloved, therefore her first marriage did not work out. Janie realized she couldn't teach someone to love her. Marriages are usually arranged by an older person who has a different set of ideals based on their experiences in life. The fundamental issue with pre-arranged weddings is this. The person arranging the marriage is only concerned with how the couple display themselves to the rest of the world, not with how they act behind closed doors.

Nanny's character in Zora Neale Hurston's novel was essentially Janie's only connection to a true mother. Nanny lived a tragic life being a former slave and was essentially forced to have a child with her master. We see that Nanny's intentions are to find Janie a man who won't treat her like garbage. She essentially does not want Janie to live what she lived. However, in this process, she is taking Janie's liberty of being a free woman. Which in return makes Janie build a hateful relationship with her Nanny.

In my opinion, an arranged marriage will in theory work out in the technical sense of two people getting married. However, marriage doesn't equal happiness. In any time period, pre-arranged marriages would work but the question of whether both parties would be happy would have to be thrown in the air. Perhaps in earlier times, it was easier for people to arrange marriages and it would have seemed as if they actually worked this was due largely because of the suppression of the women's voice.

Nanny faced trauma throughout her whole life causing struggles. Nanny was a former slave who was abused by her master and becomes pregnant with Janie's mother. Nanny's daughter Leafy was sold leaving her worried about how she is being treated (Hurston 19-20). All these struggles made her become the person she was. She raised Janie so she was her mother figure throughout her life. Her biggest wish for Janie is for her to have a good life and be able to speak her mind. She doesn't want Janie to go through all the trauma she faced in her life. Nanny believes that Janie will obtain this by marrying a well-respected man who owns his own land.

In my opinion, pre-arranged marriages do not work in anytime period. Neither partner gets to choose what they want but instead it is chosen for them leading into unhappiness. Pre-arranged marriages are done for a reason, just like how Nanny chose Logan Killicks for Jannie as he has land. It was much easier to have pre-arranged marriages back then since it was done for a reason. There is still arranged marriages in today's time but aren't seen as much. Women have much more freedom than before and are able to live the way they want.

Janie Crawford's grandmother, Nanny, is the protagonist. Nanny has reared and shielded her granddaughter, she's a domestic servant who was born a slave. Nanny's past explains her skewed perception. Nanny got impregnated by her owner while she was a slave. Her life is centered on her love for Janie and her devotion to her boss. Nanny is a determined woman within the confines of this narrow universe. She also loves Janie without a doubt, but it is a love based on duty and responsibility. It is possible that it's a projection of her own unfulfilled ambitions. In any case, because they don't have any other family, the two ladies rely on each other. All Nanny expects in return is that Janie matures into a good young lady.

In this novel by Zora Neale Hurston, Nanny is established as a women with immense miss treatment in her teenage years due to slavery. When she was sixteen her life on the plantation was horrible due to her mistress and her forced pregnancy with her master. Nanny has seen the worst of life compared to the freedom her granddaughter Janie has now, which gives proper justification into how she tried to mold Janie and Janie's life. Nanny has lived as a single mother that was abandoned by her child, she wants security and proper attention for Janie. Her ambitious moves to preserve Janie and arrange a proper marriage is the after math of trauma from her own life that she doesn't want for Janie now that they are free.

To prove if an arranged marriage has worked all depends on the reasons the marriage was made. If both the husband and wife are forced into the marriage of course they will most likely not see the marriage as an agreement as working. Even though the people who forced them might see it as effective, the people in the marriage are the only opinions that matter. In the times of the novel and even today, arranged marriages do not work out even if they might seem they do. The couple's emotions in the relationship are not connected by mutual respect for another, especially respect for love, which often leads to the relationship crumbling from within until one day they divorce are leave. A marriage works when both parties are happy and communicate.

Nanny was a character who endured many burdens, one of them being slavery. During that time she was heavily abused by her plantation owner. A result of that abuse was a forced pregnancy. This also meant that she would live to be a single mother since the plantation owner did not care for her in any way. In the book she recalls “Ah’ll have you whipped till de blood run down to yo’ heels!” showing how harsh slaves were treated(Hurston, 18). That memory is probably engraved into her head, which probably resulted in trauma. Due to the horror of her past she wants to ensure Jannie’s safety. Nanny is a very protective character who wants the best for her granddaughter. Her being protective can also be seen as overbearing. Nanny does what she feels is right to ensure that Janie has a better life. But with that she never really took consideration of what Janie wanted for herself. For instance Nanny basically forces Janie into marriage to ensure that she is not single like herself.

Marriage is about two people uniting in life by choice. Arranged marriages are a choice made for them not by them. Arranged marriages have been around for centuries, and it has been shown that they can work sometimes but not always, but most of the time they do not. No one enjoys being forced into something, especially when uniting with a stranger whom you know nothing of. Arranged marriages are usually only to benefit one party of the unification. For instance, Janies’ marriage was only to favor her because she would have a man with land. People turn to arranged marriages when needed because it is easier than waiting around to find what would be considered the perfect person. Pre-arranged marriages should not be allowed; we should all have a say in who we marry. A marriage should be two people who love and respect each other. Not two people who said yes at the altar because someone else told them to.

Arranged marriages are a reminder that you aren't free to make your own choice. I think that instead of making the person happier it destroys them deep down inside, you don't know if that person will be good to you so in most cases it doesn't work out. Marriage in general is a new chapter, when you have an arranged marriage you aren't necessarily happy in my opinion. Nanny wants an arranged marriage for Janie because she thinks that it'll be a good impact for the whole black community. Logan wasn't necessarily the best for Janie because all he wanted to do was work and he treated her more like a work slave than his wife.

Arranged marriages are risky. Sometimes it can be that both families and both people involved agree to the marriage in which case for the most part I believe if both individuals agree to it, it may work out. However, if both individuals are forced to marry without taking the time to get to know each other, the marriage may not work out because the couple knows nothing about each other. They know nothing about each other's hopes, dreams, or interests. So forced arranged marriages more than likely won't work out. But in theory, they could. It all depends on how the couple interacts and gets along. Not just for this time era but for all of the time. Marriage in general is not promised to work. You have to have good communication with your partner and compromise in situations.

She wants Janie to have a better life than she did. So she tries to make Janie a suitable wife and have an arranged marriage. Although this is not what Janie wanted, from Nanny's perspective she just wanted Janie to be taken care of and have a guaranteed better future. But in doing this she ignores Janie's wishes and Janie grows to resent her. I think both sides can be justified. Nanny wanted Janie to be taken care of but Janie wanted her freedom. Her first marriage went terrible and added more problems to Janie's life. I think Nanny should have taken Janie's feelings into more consideration and should have tried to see it from her point of view.

Arranged marriages play a big part in this story because it teaches Janie that love and marriage are two different things. Arranged marriages shape her life and make her grow up quickie and see married life for what it is. At the age of 16 Nanny made a huge change to Janie’s life and set her up for an arranged marriage after she had her first kiss to prevent the life that nanny and her mother had. Janie didn’t have a say and was put into a situation she didn’t want to be in which makes arranged marriages not okay, people should be allowed to live their lives without someone living it for them, making decisions they should be making. Arranged marriages take away people’s voices as we can see with Janie. Arranged marriages weren’t okay then and they aren’t okay now for the same reason that it takes away people’s voices and life.

Arranged Marriages take away the freedom of choice for people. Whether the couples end up building a sense of love for each other they still were never given the opportunity to find true love on their own. I believe that arranged marriages might have been more popular back in these times but were still not successful liked most would have hoped. Janie is a prime example of that. You can't force people to fall in love with people. If arranged marriages were to happen in today's day of age I believe they would not be successful at all. Many people have found their voice in saying what they want and don't want and would not do anything they did not want to do. Especially marry someone they do not know.

Nanny is an older woman who lived through the trauma of being a slave. She had a difficult life where she had no freedom and was mistreated multiple times. She became pregnant with her first child while still a slave and yet that child of hers, abandoned her despite the struggles she suffered to protect her. Nanny's struggles reveal that she is a strong woman who only wants the best for Janie. She doesn't want Janie to suffer like she did. She wants to protect her from being treated wrongly by a man like she once did. However, this protection, only makes her connection with Janie worse. She is stopping Janie from making her own choices regarding her love interests, which is why Janie resents her. Janie is justified for resenting her Nanny because her nanny is arranging her future, however, at the same time, Janie should understand that her Nanny is wanting to protect her.

Arranged marriages take away one's freedom to decide who they want to share their future with. Sometimes arranged marriages do end up working for the two individuals, however, most of the time, they don't. This is because the opportunity to get to know the other person well enough is prevented. During the times of this novel, arranged marriages most likely did work, however, that doesn't mean that the couples were happily in love with one another. In our times, arranged marriages are less common, however, when they do occur, they mostly do not work. The reason for this is that today's women now have a voice and are able to stand up for what they want. In the past, women did not have the same power, which meant that sometimes they just had to agree with what others told them to do.

Janie´s grandma was the closest thing she had to a mother. After enduring slavery, Nanny wanted Janie to pursue a greater life than the one she lived. With societal customs for women, Nanny searched and pressured Janie into marriage. In hopes of securing protection and a home, Janie marries Logan. While Janie´s grandma had good intentions with this arranged marriage, I do think it is fair for Janie to resent her. Forcing Janie into this relationship must have been quite damaging, especially given explicit information about her treatment under their relationship.

In the past, marriage was for convenience. Essentially, women were sold into a relationship or given away in hopes of women getting a ¨proper¨ life. I wouldn't say that these marriages worked, but the couple was forced to endure it. I do believe arranged marriages are still going on to this day, but are less common. You still hear about underage girls being forced to marry old, really old, males. I do not think arranged marriages are, or were, ever okay. I think that these marriages oftentimes lead to women being verbally, physically, and even sexually abused.

Arranged marriages were marriages arranged by the families of two people. Arranged marriages were mainly used as a bargaining tactic to grow the strength and wealth of two families. It was also used as a way to climb up the social ladder for some people. At this time, arranged marriages were more common so people were used to complying with the conditions of an arranged marriage. Socially arranged marriages work because its an easy way to form alliances and build up families to make them even stronger. Emotionally arranged marriages probably do not work because you are not falling in love you are signing an agreement. There is nothing more than a contract fulfillment taking place. Arranged marriages still take place to this day. They are much more lenient then the arranged marriages of the past. Couples meet and have time to get to know one another before actually getting married. They also have the power to veto the marriage and not get married at all. Arranged marriages nowadays are more like two families setting up their children because they think that they will have a successful marriage. They are not necessarily gaining or loosing anything from the marriage, they are just continuing the traditions passed down to them.

Nowadays, arranged marriages are looked at as a barbaric tradition; however, arranged marriages were often used to create stability and connections in someone’s life or family. Arranged marriages have never always benefited the women in many instances as arranged marriages are a system of the patriarchal society. Janie, despised her mother mainly because she arranged marriage with a man with 60 acres and a mule. Way more than the 40 acres and a mule proposed as reparations for slavery. He brought stability, but stability doesn’t always mean you are stable mentally. Logan was mentally abusive but brought financial stability to Janie's life. That’s what her mother wanted because that’s the way she grew up on. Janie doesn’t have to forgive her mother for her actions but understands the system of power that was ingrained into her mother.

Arranged marriages in the past, and even now, do not have a high success rate in terms of happiness. Arranged marriages were more of a deal proposed by the families rather than a union of love. Although arranged marriages may work out, it often takes lots of time, effort, and communication to get to a "good" point. Pre-arranged marriages can be arranged since the moment of birth or as soon as they come to age. Often there are stories of large concerning age gaps, only for the benefit of the families. Now arranged marriages are seen as a tradition and less of a necessity. Couples are now allowed to interact with one another, with boundaries in place, before deciding to go through with the marriage. They now have a choice to marry or not, leading to a higher success rate, but the concept is still looked down upon.

She believes that the only way to protect herself is to defend herself excessively. Nanny's past as a slave imprinted a significant desire for financial security, respectability, and upward mobility in her worldview. Janie's independence and ambition to see the world are at odds with these beliefs. Nanny believes that a good marriage for Janie was preferable to a love connection. Despite Nanny's good intentions, Janie finds up in a loveless marriage with Logan Killicks, which leads to a loveless marriage with Jody. Janie resents her grandmother for raising her according to a misguided belief system that favors consumerism and social prestige, which explains why she despises her grandma.

Arranged marriages are important in this novel because they educate Janie that love and marriage are not the same thing. Marriages that are arranged affect her life and force her to mature quickly. Janie had no say and was forced into a circumstance she didn't want to be in, which is why arranged weddings are not acceptable; people should be able to live their own life without someone else doing so for them.

Nanny wasn't able to complete and pursue her dreams which thanks to her experience she knows how hard life is with nothing. Nanny really began from nothing because during slavery slaves did not have any respect, land, money, or freedom. Her time of being a slave made Nanny's core values be financial stability, a good marriage, and respectability. Janie is justified for resenting her Nanny because Janie should be able to have a loving marriage rather then a solely beneficial marriage. Although Janie did have the right to resenting her Nanny I don't agree she should have, since her Nanny was just trying to best prepare her for the world to not suffer of the same struggles she did.

Yes, pre-arranged marriages did work during this time. Pre-arranged marriages were used to create greater respect and fortune for both parties involved. Pre-arranged marriages kept the higher status of the population in a higher status and the lower status of people in the lower percent. In other words it just made the rich richer and the poor poorer. During this time it was important to have money and respect which is what you would receive with participating in a pre-arranged marriage which is what made pre-arranged marriages work during this time. Pre-arranged marriages will not work nowadays because woman do not need to be dependent on a man or his family's wealth and fortune to gain and receive respect and fortune from others. There are many more work opportunities where you can make a name for yourself not needing to marry someone of greater status.

This would typically be used for the family’s financial gain. As times have changed, pre arranged marriages are not very common now.

Nanny had endured a lot of trauma while she was in slavery. Nanny's struggles show why she is so protective over Janie. Nanny wanted Janie to have a stable life with a suitable husband. Forcing Janie into this marriage was her attempt to provide Janie with a better life. I think it is fair for Janie to have resentment towards Nanny. Forcing her into this marriage without considering Janie's feelings was very damaging to their relationship. I also see reasons for why Nanny did what she did. Nanny only wanted the best for Janie. Even though Nanny had good intentions she should have taken into consideration the way Janie felt.

In the past, arranged marriages were normal and very common. The parents would typically arrange their daughter's marriage and they would have it arrange pretty earlier on in her years. These arranged marriages weren't based off of love it was based off the two families and sometimes even based off of the families financial standings. Now even though that arranged marriages were common, doesn't mean that they fully worked out. I don't think that arranged marriages worked out in the past and they most certainly don't work now and days. When you are trying to do a arranged marriage you don't really get a say on who you would wish to marry and sometimes you can be stuck with someone who doesn't even make you happy.

Arranged marriages are now seen as a cruel institution; nonetheless, they were once intended to provide stability and relationships in a person's life or family. Arranged marriages have not always assisted females in many cases because they represent a sexist society's structure. Arranged marriages deprive people of their ability to choose who they want to share their lives with in the future. Janie loathed her mother because she had arranged her mother's marriage with a man who owned 60 acres and a mule. Much greater than the suggested reparations of 40 acres and a mule for slavery. Planned weddings are less prevalent nowadays, but once they do happen, they almost always fail. This is because today's women have a voice and are capable of standing up for what they want. Arranged weddings, I believe, were more frequent at the time, although they were still not as successful as most would have wished. Janie is one of the best examples of this. It's impossible to make people fall in love with each other. Arranged weddings, if they were to occur in today's world, I believe they would fail miserably.

I think back then pre-arragned marriages worked most of the time because they were normal. I think that these marriages were usually not healthy but back then it did not matter. In recent times pre-arranged marriages are not normal. Because women are allowed to make a lot of their own choices I believe that pre-arranged marriages would not work anymore. Today when people are choosing to get married it is usually based on their love for each other. Society has evolved in a way that has allowed women to make their own decisions. Back then women had little to no power over their own lives. I think this is the main reason why pre-arranged marriages would no longer work.

During her time as a slave, Nanny had been through a lot of suffering. Nanny's difficulties demonstrate why she is so possessive of Janie. Janie deserved a secure existence with a decent partner, according to Nanny. Her effort to offer Janie a better life was to force her into this marriage. She was attempting to change the fate of her daughter. Her daughter's connection with her can readily depict the pain that occurs in the black community. Nanny was raped and gave birth to her daughter Janie as a result. She was born a slave, but as time went on, she gained her freedom.Janie's animosity towards Nanny is understandable, in my opinion. Forcing her into this marriage without taking Janie's sentiments into account was disastrous for their relationship. I can also see why Nanny acted the way she did. Janie was Janie, and Nanny only wanted the best for her. Even though Nanny had the best of intentions, she should have considered Janie's feelings.

In the book, Their Eyes Were Watching God, Nanny was one of the characters in the book who was trying to seek justice for her daughter, Janie. Nanny had at one point in her life been a slave and with being a slave she wasn't able to pursue any of her dreams and had to do things against her free will. With her experiences of being a slave it made Nanny have many other desires like financial stability and respectability. Nanny wanted to provide Janie with a better life and wanted to be able to change her fate. Janie may have not seen what exactly Nanny was trying to do because she had certain feelings based on the circumstances and didn't want the marriage.

Nanny is a remarkable character, she wants the best for Janie. Since Nanny was a former slave, she didn't have the opportunity to follow her dreams or live a comfortable life. Being a former slave meant having trauma, Nanny struggled to have and find her independence. This shows that Nanny does not want Janie to face the same problems she did, even if it meant giving up Janie's happiness. I think Janie's resentment is justified. Being forced into a marriage, without love is not something someone wishes to have in a marriage.

Pre-arranged marriages tend to be formed by two families who benefit from the marriages. These arranged marriages were popularized during this time. In retrospect, it seems as if it would be a good idea, because of the benefits within the marriages, like money and status. However, most of these marriages did not include happy partners. Now, in our times, arranged marriages are hardly seen. There are times where influential people need to marry someone with a high status so they can boost their own status. Most of these marriages would end up with divorces because they are not happy.

Pre-arranged marriages kept the public's higher level people in the upper percent and the lower ranking people in the lower percent. These marriages have a low success rate in terms of happiness. Love was something that was not prioritized in marriages at the time. Now, arranged marriages aren't normal.
