Janie is being forced to live the life she desires by Nanny. Nanny has high hopes for Janie's marriage and subsequent status as a respectable wife. She doesn't want Janie to be remembered as an unmarried mother of a child, as she used to be. Nanny appears to prioritize this objective above all else, and in her efforts to find Janie a good husband, she ignores Janie's needs. Nanny's definition of a good life is based on middle-class values and financial security. She knows she won't be able to fulfill this ambition in her lifetime, so she forces it on Janie by forcing her to marry a well-known landowner. Janie's resentment towards her Nanny is understandable. She despises her grandma for instilling in her a distorted ideology that prioritizes materialism and social standing. Janie recognizes that she was trained to prioritize money and reputation. Pre-arranged marriages, in my opinion, did not work back then and do not work now. Because of Logan Killicks' financial security, Nanny arranges Janie's marriage to him in the novel. Logan was everything Janie despised in a man, which Nanny failed to notice. Janie felt used, abused, and unloved, therefore her first marriage did not work out. Janie realized she couldn't teach someone to love her. Marriages are usually arranged by an older person who has a different set of ideals based on their experiences in life. Nanny is an interesting character. Her relationship with her daughter represents the generational trauma that exists in the black community. Nanny is a victim of rape and gave birth to Janie. She was born a slave but became free throughout her life. Nanny's upbringing has caused her to put the traumas and worries that she carried through her upbringing on to Janie. Nanny, never had stability or the traditional perfect family. She wished that her daughter has that even if it meant destroying her daughter's identity in the process. Nowadays, arranged marriages are looked at as a barbaric tradition; however, arranged marriages were often used to create stability and connections in someone’s life or family. Arranged marriages have never always benefited the women in many instances as arranged marriages are a system of the patriarchal society. Janie, despised her mother mainly because she arranged marriage with a man with 60 acres and a mule. Way more than the 40 acres and a mule proposed as reparations for slavery. He brought stability, but stability doesn’t always mean you are stable mentally. Logan was mentally abusive but brought financial stability to Janie's life. That’s what her mother wanted because that’s the way she grew up on. There might be some arranged marriages that work out, but at first it was with dishonesty, uninterested, and even no communication at all. Some pre-arranged marriages are made from the moment of that person’s birth and as soon as they come of age, when the arranged details are made. Some marriages have huge age gaps, and this doesn’t affect the families of the person they are going to wed because it is going to benefit the family. Arranged marriages were seen as traditions in the past, now people are able to marry the person they feel a connection with and love. Planned weddings are less prevalent nowadays, but once they do happen, they almost always fail. This is because today's women have a voice and are capable of standing up for what they want. Arranged weddings, I believe, were more frequent at the time, although they were still not as successful as most would have wished. Janie is one of the best examples of this. It's impossible to make people fall in love with each other. Arranged weddings, if they were to occur in today's world, I believe they would fail miserably.
