I would describe Natalie's schooling experience and environment a positive and supportive one.

2. Natalie's SEL needs were met on a few fronts through the good observations from Mrs Tan (Form teacher) and her friends in class (Hafiz, Rohan and Kai Ting). They are important as it enables Natalie to feel that she is being supported and her views mattered to her teachers, the canteen vendor and her friends in class.

3. Overall, I personally think that it is her school environment, starting right in the morning, when Mrs Tan and Uncle Lim is able to identify that she's not feeling ok, down to the canteen vendors and her friends who chatted with her (finding out what's bothering her).

4. We want to embrace and educate all students who walk through the gates of our school. In order to reach out to them, personal engagement, the school's tone and environment, all played key roles in providing that positive schooling experiences for our young learners.

5. I imagine this through the eyes of a young West Springer - I come to school because I want to play with my friends, I want my friends to play with me. I learn in my class and my teachers always ask me if I understand what I am learning. My school is safe and I can ask for help from any teachers in my school. I can share my ideas with my teachers and friends, and see if it works for my class / school. My form teachers takes time to listen to me and I can share what are my ups and downs in the week. I enjoy coming to school everyday because I know I matter to the school.

6. We have many good platforms / programmes and initiatives that builds on TSR, PSR, allowing students' voice, good adult modelling and consistent messaging in school.     Peer Support & Relationships: This is perhaps the most fundamental in fulfilling the social-emotional needs of students as they interact with their friends most of the time.  Most students would turn to their friends rather than adults for help.  With PSR, it helps students to build strong bonds of friendships and a sense of belonging to the school community.  It also encourages students to provide social-emotional support to one another and role model good character (peer influencing).  These are essential to the building of a caring and supportive peer culture, especially in times like this. 

    3.   Her teacher (Mrs Tan), her friends, the GO staff, the canteen vendor and anyone else who have crossed path with her in school. 

    4.  Students, and teachers alike, are able to feel accepted, safe, and empowered.  A caring and enabling school environment allows them to share their problems openly with their friends and teachers.  This is especially important as the Covid-19 situation has also added many stressors to the lives of our students in school and at home and it is clearly evident with the recent spate of suicidal and assault cases.  Such an environment also provides an opportunity for teachers to close or narrow the educational and social inequalities that may be present in school.  It allows students, regardless of their social-economic status, to understand and appreciate each other and everyone has an equal chance to succeed as long as they work hard. A caring and enabling school environment also allows positive relationships for learning.  Students are also able to articulate their thoughts and dialogue with one another. They are able to work collaboratively and it encourages them to take ownership of learning.  

    5.   Everyone will feel connected to one another.  Words of encouragement can be heard among students and teachers.  Students and teachers will come to school with a growth mind-set and everyone can be seen helping each other to grow. They will not be afraid of setbacks and problems as they know that there will be help rendered to them in school. 

    6.   Teachers are role models who have a powerful influence on students.  Students look to them for guidance, advice, support, advice and wisdom
    It is important for teachers to build good relationship with students and truly understand how they feel.  Teachers should also encourage, inspire and motivate students as they create space for students to be heard.  Words are better put in actions. “I hear and I forget.  I see I can remember.  I do I understand.” When students see the teachers making an effort in all these, the students will remember and do the same during their interactions in school.

    4.    Current generation of parents are busy and they may not have the proper interaction time with their children. In addition, technology has an influential impact on the child because they will find ways to get attention or bury their emotions. This can lead to a negative upbringing of the child as they may not be able to portray the right values. 

    5.    A non-threatening and an environment that allows students to feel safe to care for one another. It may not necessary be noticing a person who is feeling down but it could also be informing teachers of any incorrect behavior by others without the fear that the student involved will be upset with the person who reports about the behavior.

    6.    Role-modelling is important. In addition, we need to come across as a teacher who mean it when we say certain things, rather than to say things to threaten the students. Our words we say may seem to the students as scolding but sometimes that is necessary or we could go into a different approach. However, the key here is for them to understand we care for their well-being as well through our varied approaches.
