1. I would describe Natalie's schooling experience and environment a positive and supportive one.

2. Natalie's SEL needs were met on a few fronts through the good observations from Mrs Tan (Form teacher) and her friends in class (Hafiz, Rohan and Kai Ting). They are important as it enables Natalie to feel that she is being supported and her views mattered to her teachers, the canteen vendor and her friends in class.

3. Overall, I personally think that it is her school environment, starting right in the morning, when Mrs Tan and Uncle Lim is able to identify that she's not feeling ok, down to the canteen vendors and her friends who chatted with her (finding out what's bothering her).

4. We want to embrace and educate all students who walk through the gates of our school. In order to reach out to them, personal engagement, the school's tone and environment, all played key roles in providing that positive schooling experiences for our young learners.

5. I imagine this through the eyes of a young West Springer - I come to school because I want to play with my friends, I want my friends to play with me. I learn in my class and my teachers always ask me if I understand what I am learning. My school is safe and I can ask for help from any teachers in my school. I can share my ideas with my teachers and friends, and see if it works for my class / school. My form teachers takes time to listen to me and I can share what are my ups and downs in the week. I enjoy coming to school everyday because I know I matter to the school.

6. We have many good platforms / programmes and initiatives that builds on TSR, PSR, allowing students' voice, good adult modelling and consistent messaging in school. We could possibly go in depth in each of these areas to see if we can do more and streamline efforts across academic / non-academic / co-curricular areas.

They feel acknowledged by teachers and peers who care. With affective domain needs met, students are more likely to learn better.
5. They are welcomed and greeted at the gate, in the class when they first step into school. She is aware of her own feelings and she feels safe when she tells her teachers and peers what she has gone through.
3. A caring and enabling environment should be a safety net for all students. They will not be afraid to speak up, care for and show gratitude to the people around them.
6.
1. How would you describe your school experience? Mine has been a so-so. Coming from a broken family was rather tough for me. Matter was worst as i'm a Singapore PR then. However, i was fortunate to have a caring teacher, Madam Jaiyah, whom till today, i keep in touch with. :) 2. What social-emotional needs have been met and why are they important? Natalie was lucky to have great support from the people around her. She seems to be popular as even the canteen vendor is willing to cook something for her. Too good to be true. Hehehehe... 3. What and who have contributed to her school experience? It seems that almost everyone was there for her as though she's living in an utopian society. 4. Why is a caring and enabling school environment one of the key levers for Singapore schools? It is so as we need to give the pupils the sense of assurance that they've been cared for. 5. How does a caring and enabling school environment look and sound to our West Springers? No doubt, a caring and enabling school is important. However, what's more important is that our pupils need to appreciate it even more and not taking advantage of the care and kindness. 6. What can teachers do to create a caring and enabling school environment? As teachers, we can try to be the supporting pillar in time of need.

1) If I'm Natalie, I would feel that my school experience is very positive and encouraging. There's a strong support system ranging from my teachers, parents and friends. 2) She would feel loved and cared for in school. Also, the people in school did not invalidate her feelings. Instead, they respected her emotions and gave her space. Subtle actions like the cheer up card is encouraging. 3) Her teachers, friends and even the other adults in school. 4) It is important for schools to be a safe space for students to be in. Especially for those who do not get the love and attention at home, the school environment could just be home to them. With this need met, then learning can take place efficiently. 5) It is an environment where students feel safe to be at and where there's a trusted adult in school for them to share their thoughts and emotions to. 6) A place where teachers are active and empathetic listeners and always validate the emotions of the kids.

Definitely something that I would look forward to daily.

2. What social-emotional needs have been met and why are they important?

Natalie has a good peer and teacher support system and this is important as she would be able to feel safe to share her feelings with them and open up should she be facing issues that may be troubling her.

3. What and who have contributed to her school experience?
The school leaders, her teachers, her peers, canteen vendors, the school staff (Guard) and so on.

4. Why is a caring and enabling school environment one of the key levers for Singapore schools?
I believe that when the school is caring and enabling, it allows students to feel like school is a safe space for them to be themselves and share their honest thoughts and opinions without the fear of any unwanted judgment or perceptions from others. When people care and understand and the environement they are in promotes this, it generally makes school a positive place to be in.

5. How does a caring and enabling school environment look and sound to our West Springers?
For our West Springers, a caring and enabling school would be one that empowers students to be part of critical decisions in the classroom/school matters as well as one where students and teacher share good TSR and there is also good peer relations with one another.

6. What can teachers do to create a caring and enabling school environment?
Teachers can spend more time and effort to genuinely get to know students and their background. Teachers can pay more attention to the small details that students might unintentionally show to provide that first step into making students feel more compelled to open up when they are facing issues. Teachers can also involve students in decisions pertaining to some classroom matters like routines and rules setting etc.

In addition, technology has an influential impact on the child because they will find ways to get attention or bury their emotions. This can lead to a negative upbringing of the child as they may not be able to portray the right values.

5. A non-threatening and an environment that allows students to feel safe to care for one another. In addition, we need to come across as a teacher who mean it when we say certain things, rather than to say things to threaten the students. Our words we say may seem to the students as scolding but sometimes that is necessary or we could go into a different approach. However, the key here is for them to understand we care for their well-being as well through our varied approaches.

Punitha 1.	I will feel safe, happy and positive. I can count on my teachers as well as my friends during difficult times when I need someone to listen and comfort me. 2. Teachers and classmates recognised and understood Natalie ’emotions and provided support and empathy to give her a positive boost to cheer her up. Natalie was assured that the environment is safe and she could open up to trusted adults as well as her classmate. Positive environment is very crucial for Natalie especially when she needs an environment that cares for her emotional well-being. 3.	Everyone in the school. Teachers, classmates as well as other staff. The whole school as a community comes together to support Natalie. That shows that the school environment and culture show deep-rooted sense of importance for social emotional well-being of every child. 4.	Caring and enabling school environment is important for Singapore schools. Children come from different family background. In current times, some students may or may not get the family support. There could be students who do not have anyone to talk to. They might be spending their time alone at home; addictive to digital games care less about studies and school work. These students look forward to come to school so that they could get the attention of teachers and their friends. Therefore, school environment should be very caring and teachers have to be empathetic and provide support for these students. 5.	We should emphasise on school core values and build culture of empathy and trust. 6.	A very good TSR with students and give them the support and motivation. Teachers and staff have to be more observant about students to provide the necessary support they need on time. It takes time and effort to build this relationship with students.
