I want to shout out the people I’ve had the chance to work with over the past year and a half year.

The ART 180 team isn’t just committed to the work, it’s grounded in care for the community and for young people. They show up, stay present, and do what needs to be done without losing that focus.

Being able to support that kind of work and be in it with them has meant a lot to me. - SRJ

I was just talking about Art 180 yesterday- someone described the type of programming they wished existed and I said, that already exists in Richmond, VA! Felt proud to direct their attention to you all as an example. Very sorry to hear that the org will be no more, but I’m sure everyone involved will continue to find ways to support kids and the arts. Thanks for all you’ve done!

I want to personally thank the staff of Art 180 for offering a safe space to not only young creators of the future, but the entire community of Richmond. It has become a true honor to share a creative space with you all, and having the pleasure of getting to know each of the staff, over past the years. Thank you again and just know there’s a new creative chapter that awaits each and every one of you. Peace and love.

This is making everything worse. I'm already going through enough now you mean to tell me the only place that I felt seen and felt like I have a chance to make it somewhere in the art world is closing? Now I have to go to the visual art center again but I really don't feel seen and safe there. I was one of the only black kids and someone even told me she rather be around rednecks than black people to my face for no reason, then we have to pay like 1000 bucks to go there and none of those people are even like me. I felt like I finally found my place and now I have to leave, everywhere I feel like myself is going away. I met so many people And wanted to come back but I've been so busy in band and at school and sadly I'll never get this message because I don't have my phone and can't look at my email but.

Thank you to everyone for making me feel seen and helping me as an artist I have deep love for all of y'all and hopefully I do make it and I see you all around and again soon.

Our relationship has been short but I am so shocked and heart broken. Please know you have sown many seeds of happiness , creativity, affirmation, acceptance, love and awesomeness into the community. I'm just gutted for all involved--staff, students, and artists. ART 180 was one of the first organizations I met with when I joined CultureWorks two years ago. From our joint grant-writing program to attending the Umama unveiling at Ebenezer Church, to grabbing TBT tacos at the Easel.... I sincerely looked up to all of your work, your drive, and your innovative, groundbreaking programming and community offerings. I hope Richmond's arts community is able to carry on a fraction of ART 180's spirit and passion into all the work we do. Please don't hesitate to reach out....❤️ -Calie Bain

The Art180 staff and Atlas Residency program gave me this moment with my daughter. She and the other selected candidates were given a stipend to learn, create, experiment, travel, and exhibit their work together. I was so impressed with her artistic and personal development over that summer as she studied various techniques and made new friendships. She is now in her second year of studying Art Conservation at the University of Delaware where she continues to excel. While this is just one of countless experiences afforded by the organization and those who supported it through the years, it made a meaningful impact to our family and I am forever grateful. I only regret I couldn't offer more support in return.

Thank you to ART 180 artists for sharing your unique voices, experiences and creative expressions with ART 180, the staff, the community and each other. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to be a part of this org and meet & know so many amazing young artists over the years! Your art in the many forms it has taken inspires me still. The commitment I witnessed across the staff to make stuff happen and show up for the young people involved in all the various programs - also inspiring. My time at ART180 really gave me a chance to see how students can make the best use of their time and emotions through self expression and community. I had the opportunity of being a teaching artist for the Digital Arts class in 2022, as well as learning how ART180 has supported the students in Richmond city for decades. Art is healing.

The piece I attached is by Glory Kadeghe, and seeing our students in the Digital Arts class excited to learn a new medium, and truly putting their mind into learning something new was enlightening.

I'm upset that ART180 is closing and I really would love for the students to take their creativity and make art that they love. Students, never stop believing in yourself, and artists, always strive to grow. Show your true colors and use your creative outlets to shine.
