Metafiction

Metafiction is fiction where the author writes a story there´s fictional, but at same time, it has elements of real life and can be based on real events. So, metafiction is a fiction genre mostly based on a true story. E.g. in “Maus” where it´s a true story, but Art Spiegelman has drawn the characters’ as mice.

1 and 2 - My panel

I have chosen to work with the big panel on page 104. In this panel we see Mr. Spiegelman and some dead mice. Mr. Spiegelman sits on a desk and he talks about that lately he had been depressed. You can also see that in his body language. His body is hunching forward and his arms are crossed. The reason why I think the mice are dead, is because of the flies in the panel. The dead mice show the reader what goes on in Mr. Spiegelman´s mind while he writes the book. The panel has no colors and there´s a lot of things going on in the drawing. The panel has only speech balloons and one motion line under the little fly next to him. It shows that the flies are moving around in the drawing.

3. Mood

If you look at the eyes in the graphic novel, most of them are alike. The only way I can see the mood switch is because of their eyebrows. In some of the panels Mr. Spiegelman has no eyebrows and in others, his eyebrows are drawn E.g. on page 107. Body language is also important, if you look at the mood in “Maus”. The way Mr. Spiegelman´s body language is different in each panel and reflects his mood. Overall the mood is very serious and personal especially, because the graphic novel is about his father’s story with the holocaust and the way it still effects Mr. Spiegelman today.

The double page works god and gives the reader a lot of information in a few pages. The double page makes the story more interesting and not so long-drawn-out. It also makes the story more interesting, because of all the drawings on each page.

5. 'Time flies'?

I think this chapter has the subtitle “time flies” because, we hear about the first part of “Maus” was published and know he still writes the book. So, we hear about a lot of things that happened many years ago, but Mr. Spiegelman is still caught in the past. Even though life move on he still thinks about what happened to his father and mother. We hear about the thoughts that went through his mind, writing this book and he looks back at the memories´ he had.

6. Masks?

The masks play a big role in this graphic novel, because it says something about the characters. If you look at Mr. Spiegelman. He wears a mouse mask which means that he´s Jewish and all the characters that wear a mouse mask are Jewish. There´s also other “animals” in this Graphic novel and each of the represent a nationality. We also hear about it on page 105 panel 5, where the interviewer asks him about which animal Israel Jews would be? He uses the masks to show the reader the different nationalities we see in “Maus”.

7. The narrator's feelings

The narrator´s feelings are important because, Mr. Spiegelman is telling his own story and because this graphic novel is personal. His feelings and thoughts create the entire graphic novel and therefore it´s important that the reader gets a feeling, about the way he feels about this situation. The feelings the mouse has in this story, is the feelings Mr. Spiegelman had in those certain situations. Those feeling create the entire mood of the story and chose the way people perceive the story.
