The doctrine was focused on providing economic and financial aid to prevent these war torn countries from becoming communist states. The Berlin airlifts was started by the Berlin blockade when Stalin closed all rail and road routes into western Berlin which halted the stream of needed supplies such as food, fuel, and medicine which left the state of 2 million citizens with 5 weeks of food. This left the allies such as Britain and the United States with no choice but to airlift supplies to Berlin, these planes brought necessary supplies including food, medicine and even Christmas presents that pilots brought with their own money.
