The painting is called Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (The Young Ladies of Avignon) by the Spanish artist Pablo Picasso in 1907. The work portrays five nude fe\male prostitutes from a brothel on Carrer d'Avinyo (Avignon Street) in Barcelona. Each figure is depicted in a disconcerting confrontational manne and none are conventionally feminine. The women appear slightly menacing and rendered with angular and disjointed body shapes. Three figures on the left exhibit facial features in the Iberian style of Picasso's native Spain , while the two on the right are shown with African mask-like features. Picasso used oil on canvas and partly old pigments such as lead white, vermilions and ochre and partly modern pigments such as cobalt blue and emerald green. Picasso was a 25 year-old Spanish immigrant to France when he painted Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, working in a cramped warren of studios on the Parisian hill of Montmarte . The story of its making begins with hundreds of preparatory paintings and drawings , which he generated over an intensive six-month period, working out his ideas. They reflected Picasso's responses to Paul Cezanne's structured, almost sculptural depiction of objects and figures and his prismatic structuring of space in his still lifes and scenes of bathers. They also reflected his fascination with the African, Iberian masks and statuary populating France's ethnographic museums, as well as the lusts and anxieties wrapped up in his own , complex relationships with women. Les Demoiselles would not be exhibited until 1916, and not widely recognized as a revolutionary achievement until the early 1920s, when Andre Breton (1896-1966) published the work. Richardson goes on to say that Henri Matisse was fighting mad upon seeing the Demoiselles atPicasso's studio. He let it be known that he regarded the painting as an attempt to ridicule the modern movement, he was outraged to find his sensational Blue Nude, not to speak of Bonheur de vivre , overtaken by Picasso's "hideous" whores. He vowed to get even and make Picasso beg for mercy. Just as the Bonheur de vivre had fueled Picasso's competitivness, Les Demoiselles now fueled Matisses's. And the artmovement is called Modernism.

This painting by Pablo Picasso is titled The Young Ladies of Avignon. Painted in 1907, the painting is done on oil on canvas and portrays five naked women with two of them wearing masks inspired by the African culture. There are many speculations as to what Avignon in the title of the painting means. Some say it could be referring to the brothel and some speculates that it could mean the place of the pope. Because of this, the artwork was severely criticised by the art community at that time. Picasso used mainly basic and old pigments such as lead white, vermillion and ochre at that time. He also used partly modern paint such as cobalt blue and vermillion green. Picasso was born in Spain but moved to France in the pursuit of art. After the The Young Ladies of Avignon was painted, only a selected few got to view the artwork and many hated it. Daniel Henry-Kahnweiler was one of the few that stood by Picasso when he was criticised heavily because of the painting. The painting was then released for public viewing around 1916. The painting was described as the start of Cubism according to Kahnweiler
