Using a SEL activity gives the teacher insight into where their students are emotionally going into a lesson. It is a great way to know which students you need to check in on throughout that day. It also helps the teacher drive her lesson- maybe before diving into the next lesson the teacher needs to share a short video or read a book aloud to address what students are feeling.

SEL activities have so many purposes, one of which is to "recalibrate" the class culture. Working on an activity with something like relationship building helps to reinforce treating others with kindness and being a good classmate. Doing these kinds of activities has helped me in the past with establishing collaboration between students. Since most of them know each other after all of the work we've done, I can put people together with a few less complaints and awkwardness.

It can reveal areas where students are struggling in non-academic ways that can impact their academics. It allows teachers and students to connect with one another and can allow students to connect with classmates.

SEL activities allow teachers to check in with their students in a way that is meaningful and allows them to understand students mindsets in being prepared for learning that day or during that lesson. SEL activities also work to build a safe and positive learning enviornment for students and classrooms where all students can feel safe, accepted and engaged in learning and growing as learners. I like this particular toolkit becuase it looks to align nicely with the CASEL framework which we use in district and our convesrations with teachers and students.

I like the Relationship-Building Activities portion of the SEL Toolkit for my present-day learners. Every time we are disrupted by pandemic issues, I find that we are constantly starting back at 'Square One' with re-establishing a class culture. Young learners are constantly withdrawing back into the safety nets of their own personal technology devices and basic communication and interpersonal expression are taking a back seat. Having options like these for lessons would help re-establish these foundations of humanity!

It also, in so many cases, provides most, if not all, of the stability in a child's life. The SEL activities are all excellent ways to develop these individual and group skills! It is important to first help students understand themselves and then to help them see where they fit into the dynamics of the classroom and daily life, and the relationship building activities are wonderful for building that sense of community and support that every classroom must provide.

When I was in the classroom, I held a morning meeting every day. Every student had the opportunity to speak if they wanted to. They shared an Accomplishment, Achievement, or Adventure. This gave them the opportunity to talk about their family, sports, school, anything they wanted. Now I am supporting teachers in their classrooms, and I see this morning time is taken away from them because they are required to do literacy centers right after morning announcements. Using one of the ready-made activities or tweaking one as they see fit first thing in the morning allows teachers to determine how their students are starting the day. She can go meet with students and check in on them. SEL is so important. I think if students know you care about them, they are more receptive to learning.
~M. Alicea

When viewing all of the activities in the SEL Toolkit I saw several that I thought teachers could use, but the one that immediately got to me was the Self-Awareness Core Values ranking activity.
I could see a 4th Grade Social Studies Teacher thinking about teaching on the Battle of the Alamo. Before teaching that topic, the teacher could have students start the lesson by completing the Core Value ranking and then take a few minutes to have students share why they ranked their choices in that order. Then discuss that things like perseverance, leadership, and service are things that people had to have long ago as well during the battle. This could help students to be aware not only of their own thoughts, ideas, feelings, but also visualize and understand what it was like for Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie, and others to be a part of such a big event that changed the history of Texas.
Furthermore, I could also use this Core-Value ranking in starting a training with teachers. Then have them share with one another the reasons they ranked their choices and to think about taking that value into teaching a specific topic in math that might be difficult - how to have perseverance because it will be worth it in the end and also it models this value to the students. So many good resources from the SEL Toolkit!

I really love the bit on responsible decision-making. We preach our core values but this aspect is harder to teach. Kids are making decisions constantly. I like the idea of having a framework and expectations of what this could (should) look like. The helpful/hurtful sort would be especially effective with my K-3 students.
Looking at the SEL toolkit, the first way I thought about using it would be to share it with our school counselors. This would be a great tool for them. I could also share it with our teachers, so they can incorporate these check ins into their lessons. As an Instructional Technology Specialist, I could also use the toolkit as a way to check in with my teachers prior to training!

It lets students know that who they are as a person is just as important as the content which you are teaching. It allows you as a teacher to connect with your students in a nonthreatening way and show them that you value them. It is also important for them to acknowledge their own social and emotional development and begin to learn new, positive ways to cope with their emotions.

Through SEL, children develop
awareness and management of their emotions, set and achieve important personal and academic goals, use social awareness and interpersonal skills to establish and maintain positive relationships, and demonstrate decision making and responsible behaviors to achieve school and life success. Setting this SEL intention at the beginning of lessons will set students up for success to manage their emotions through content/skills they may not know or understand. I've attached my go-to SEL slide I use before each of my professional development training decks.

I've learned that pre-teaching how to work through emotions and situations has caused less anxiety, frustration, or shut down from students if they have tools or prior knowledge of how to work through various things!

It is how we, as individuals and as a group, deal with the those various levels that becomes the point of development and focus. It also brings the focus on the state, rather than the individual, the former being changeable and not personal while the latter can become quite personal in terms of the way it is perceived.

There is a cliche that I consistently use - Maslow before Bloom. Unless students feel that the learning environment is a safe and comfortable one. One that they feel that they can engage in the learning without risk! The tools presented do provide a means to start the learning by "breaking the ice" so that students feel safe, comfortable and that they will have their thoughts valued and respected.

Our District hosts a "Wellness Wednesday" for students to take part in various wellness activities and the resources in Lumio's SEL Toolkit are perfect for these days. I like the responsible decision making activities to help students think and learn how what they do (or others do) impact the learning environment. If we guide them early in the year, we can make help them make good choices and increase their learning opportunities for life!

First, I would like to use this as a check in/share opportunity where students can begin class by checking in on where they're at emotionally, share wins, etc. Second, I would like to use these as discussion starters. This toolkit allows students to think about themselves, what they value, and why they are the way they are, and then to articulate that in discussions with their classmates.

I work in a district where Maslow's heitchy of needs is a real barrior to learning. The information can help me discern if that student needs space, a pat on the back, a do you want to talk note, etc... It can also be used to celebrate the students and the activities that are making them happy.

I really enjoy using the check-in ready made SEL activities with the emotions or icons at the start/middle/end of a professional development session to quickly gauge how staff are feeling. This helps me get a sense or where they're mind is at and in some cases, knowing how far I can "push" during the learning session! I have also like using the rank order activity during sessions to have staff order what may be most important for them to learn during the session or what they believe a good PD will provide from those leading it. Asking them what qualities a presenter should have is a good way for me to check in with what I'm bringing to the table as a learning facilitator for staff!
