The devised piece that we have been working on was called "Beneath The Surface". The point of the piece was about showing the audience that there is always more beneath the surface than anyone first realises, whether its between families, relationships or other bonds. There's more hidden underneath than what is already showing on the surface and it proves that you should not to judge as you don't know what the story is behind the mask as you only see the outside. We were given 4 main stimuli; HIDDEN, ILLUSION, PERFECTION and STORIES/SECRETS to base our own work on in order for each person's material to be relevant to one another.

In the final performance, I felt that I was able to convey my monologue effectively, especially as I had to write it quickly due to a song falling through that I was supposed to perform. From it falling through, I have learnt not to rely on someone completely for a piece to use even as we were meant to be working together and have a backup piece of material to use in case it does happen again. After being able to memorise my monologue, we made the decision to join mine with Coral's. I had my doubts at first but after we combined them, we realised that it would create a more effective piece, which I think in the final performance, was proved right. Something that I thought I did well was bringing emotion into my spoken monologue without it being overly dramatic. I also managed to project well so that my audience could hear me, but also with the emotion to convey the frustrations and feelings of my character Jessica. I took the advice that Kate had given us after a full dress rehearsal of looking at the audience and speaking from the heart instead of the mind, which could make the audience understand what I am saying to them and possibly put them into my characters position of feeling isolated. It also makes them more aware of the situation taking place in the characters life.

What could have made it better would have been maybe at the end of the monologue, the audience could have been asked a rhetorical question, which leaves them to think of the possible outcome and leaving the situation onto them. There could have also been a change of lighting to an eerie red when I started to say "Family is supposed to..." As it creates a more mysterious atmosphere and is a good transition into the Run boy run motif afterwards. Furthermore, when it came to speaking in the final performance, I felt that I rushed my words compared to Coral who spoke quite slowly. I feel this might have been down to slight nerves but that is something I have to work on for future performances.
In regards to my costume, I wore all grey compared to others wearing a mix of black, burgundy and grey which could have made my character stand out more to the audience possibly making them think there was more about them to discover later on In the performance, when there wasn’t. If I were to do it again, Id possibly wear black with a grey jacket or cardigan so I blend in more with everyone else instead of standing out in just grey.

In the beginning of the performance, Emily did make a mistake during the Run boy run motif. Despite this, she carried on professionally without making a fuss of it so no one would notice. During this motif, the music gave off an aggressive feel. This could have been matched in movement for some parts as some of the dancers were more elegant than assertive. In order to do this, the dancers needed more momentum to give off a more assertive feel. In the beginning after the motif, Rosie, Emily, Anna and Harriett did a spoken word section to introduce the piece. I feel that more projection could have been used by Rosie, Emily and Anna as without it, there is a less clearer understanding of what is being said. They could have also used a more aggressive tone of voice to match the dynamics of the music instead of the gentle voices that were used.

Harriett did have a good use of projection in her monologue after this which gave a more sad, frustrated and upset feel. Her tone of voice portrayed her story effectively and also engaged the audience and drew them in. However, she could have talked slower as her articulation in parts of the monologue wasn’t too clear.

In Emily's monologue, there was an upsetting and frustrating topic being covered after she loses her twin sister. She managed to put in the right amount of emotion to affect the audience members. The gestures however were sometimes delayed as she was doing them after the line rather than during. She also lacked slightly in projection as sometimes she would mumble but then project on other lines.

Jason's monologue could have also used more projection as even though I was standing next to him, it was very difficult to hear what he was saying most times. However, when it came to him shouting "No! I don’t want to know!" It built more tension within the story and jolted the audience making them pay more attention to what is happening. The monologue was combined with scenes re-enacting what Jason was saying which kept the audience hooked. It also brought the situation to life, making the audience aware of the matter of domestic violence and the consequences in a family.

Overall, I think the final performance went well and better than any of us had expected. Despite a few slip up's, everyone carried on professionally creating a mature devised piece with a roller coaster ride of emotions that hooked the audience into each person's story and situation.
