The fisherman is a young man who willing takes care of Ishmael and the group of seven boys who look for shelter inside of his fishing hut because it is the right thing to do even though part of the conflict at this part of the story is people turning on each other instead of helping one another. Towards the end of the chapter when the chieftain releases the boys from the village he asks Ishmael if anyone had known about them and he lies about it showing that he is developing as a character because he wants to protect the fisherman who had given them aid otherwise the fisherman would have been punished for knowing and not telling about the boys sooner. The fisherman also goes against the theme that is apparent in all of the villages and people during this time of fear because he is quite happy with how his life is going and seems to be quite calm about things.

The two ears of corn convey the significance of the conflict that Ishmael Beah faces. As the story progresses he is forced to become ruthless and violent, stealing corn from a small boy just to satisfy his hunger. Ishmael, at this point, still feels guilt for taking the corn from the boy, "I felt guilty about it for a few minutes, but in our position, there wasn't much time for remorse." However, he is conflicted with overwhelming feelings of hunger and despair.

Carly Smith

The scene with the young boy who was eating the two ears of corn on his own plays a role on the conflict of the story. It is a conflict between the boy and the group that Ishmael is apart of because the group rushes as the boy and takes the food. It also is a conflict of man vs nature in the sense that the group of boys, including Ishmael are starving and have to battle it and do what they must to survive, even if it means to steal.

Emily Peralta.

When Ishmeal Beah is able to climb the tree, it shows that his strength and willpower goes beyond his conscious. When he is left with no food and barely any strength left, the only thing that there was to do was climb the coconut tree. Without even thinking he was able to climb it in an instant. However, when he got some rest and had a little bit of strength, he was no longer able to climb it anymore.

The term is significant in the way that it relates to the conflict. The conflict of the rebels attacking the innocent villagers is evident here since the rebels just walked into the village and demanded to know what parts of the forest people were hiding in. The Imam refused to tell them so they mercilessly tied him up with wire and set him on fire in the middle of the town for all to see. The boys are not safe anywhere since no matter where they travel, the rebels find a way to disrupt the village that they are in and create chaos.

Ishmael spent a considerable amount of time being alone in the forest. During this time, his character changes, Like he says, he was becoming more wild, more savage. He was changing. Also, I think he developed independence skills, since he was managing to find enough water and food to survive all the time he was there alone. Furthermore, his social skills got worse. When he met the group of boys, he said he felt uncomfortable around them. He wasn't used to seeing people anymore. Lastly, he had plenty of time to think, giving him the chance to consider why all of this was happening and what he was becoming, thanks to the situations.

Ishmael still has a sense of humanity because he shows remorse for the old man unlike the rebels. This event shows that Ishmaels development is still somewhat pure.
