Active learning about engaging students in meaningful authentic ways. This approach to learning is about putting the students in the driver's seat and teachers facilitate and support. Active learning experiences are engaging because they are student-centered and experience-based. Students often need to think critically, collaborate with peers, and develop their ideas in a creative or innovative way.

3. What is 'One Year in Six Words'?

This technique requires students to reflect on an experience and create a six-word memoir detailing their thoughts, feelings, learning, etc. In the example, students were asked to reflect on their school year and sum it up in six words. This technique is deceptively complicated. While students as young as kindergarten have the capacity to participate, the challenge is in the word choice, word order, and prioritization of ideas. Because this technique is reflective, students can see an example, yet it is difficult for them to replicate since each person's experience is so personal.

7. Variations of This Technique

This is a great technique to use any time a summary or reflection is necessary. There is no magic to the number 'six,' rather the idea is to limit the author to a minimal amount of words, creating an experience where the author has to be very careful with their words.

I have used '20 word summary' before when I taught sixth grade. We finished The Westing Game and students were asked to write about the most dynamic character, but they could only use EXACTLY 20 words. Initially students felt that the task would be simple because of the minimal word requirement and they were shocked that the tendency to go over the limit was way more common than not having enough words. Students needed to engage in much more editing and rereading of their own words, something that they rarely did naturally.

Regardless, the point is to limit the amount of words and create an experience where students need to carefully construct an original piece with thoughtfully crafted ideas. Publishing is a vital part of the experience, and offering an opportunity for constructive feedback is another motivating piece.
