Witchcraft started from the home of Reverend Samuel Parris when his daughter and niece began showing symptoms of witchcraft. He was the puritan minister of Salem MA during the time of the witch hunts. He actively encouraged the witch hunts. The reason for his encouragement towards the witch hunt was due to his fear of losing his occupation. His daughter and niece were part of the girls who went around accusing others of witchcraft

The witch trials in Salem were extreme, many women and men were wrongly accused. Sometimes women would undress in front of everyone to look for witch markings indicating that you were in fact a witch. Spectral sightings were one of the ways the accused would be sentenced to jail. Spectral sightings were only able to be seen and heard by the accusers. Accusers would say they are being attacked spiritually by the accused

The puritans left England to come to America for religious freedom. The puritan's practiced religious heavily and were devout Christians. they believed that Salem would be a "city on a hill". Believed that people are born sinners and only a couple people from birth were God's chosen to enter heaven while the rest of the people suffered in hell. People in Salem thought that if the acted pure that God would change his mind and make them one of the few chosen to go to heaven.

The people of Salem believed that the devil was always near trying to recruits witches and wizards to do evil deeds. During the time of the Salem witch trials MA was going through a rough period such as troubles with native Americans and many more. This really made it seem as if it were the Devil himself causing trouble in Salem. Many people actually confessed to being witched during trials so it further credited the thought that witches and wizards were present. Due to the strict religious rules puritanism had many believe that the girls accusing people of witchcraft were just bored and had liked their attention from their town, making them famous in a way.

Arthur Miller

Arthur Miller is the Author for the Crucible and he uses his life as an example in which he wrote the Crucible after. Miller was married but when fame takes over his life he ends up having an affair with the Marylin Monroe and ends up married to her. Miller was alive during the modern witch hunt in America, only they weren't looking for witches but communists and communist sympathizers. A crucible is a melting pot in which metals are melted and it's impurities would float to the top, this is a very fitting name for the play as the hysteria over witchcraft has the people of Salem at each other's throats. however when this play had first come out it in fact did not do so well.
