The first use of gas warfare was in ww1 by the germans. They used an early form of tear gas that wasn't really tear gas. The Germans were really disappointed with all that the tear gas did. The chemist then went back to the lab and made something even better to fight with, Chlorine Gas. It killed many people the first time it was used due to suffocation. The British then came back and started using it back on them as well. A lot of people seen chemicals in warfare as a form of cowardly fighting.

The date of the first use of chemical warfare was January 31, 1915. On this day more than 18,000 gas shells were dropped onto the russian military. The first attempt was not effective because of the weather. After some research an effective product was made and used. I also learned there was a gas gong that sounded before they would drop gas. Lots of soldiers thought they were gassed but also thought they were cured with placebo medication from the doctors. This shows how much panic the gas would bring to the soldiers.

Chemical weapons were very harmful but important at the same time. During war people used gas to kill other people. It was mind blowing how many people got away with it. During WWl people who were in the trenches had to wear these masks in order not to get it in their face. This gas was killing people in seconds. This was very shocking because people who did it did not care. I learned that this was very traumatizing for people. This type of chemical can burn your skin off. It can also cause you not to breathe really well. These people were struggling either if they dug up their hole people would have still used the chemical underneath.

The first chemical weapons engaged in warfare were introduced by the Germans. Releasing as much as 18,000 gas shells of chemical xylyl bromide, Gen Hoffman watched as the results left him in despair. This didn't cause him and the Germans to stop as chemists kept creating deadlier gasses to defeat enemies. Countries realized that gas warfare was effective leading Britain to attack German trenches with their own technique using chemical gasses. This then led to gas usage being a common routine feature used during trench warfare. Although the usage of gas weapons was seen as "cowardly" and referred to as a weak form of warfare, it didn't stop countries from producing more effective gasses to get the upper-hand on the enemy. The gas brought fear into these soldiers causing their numbers to drop due to evacuation as "gas casualties". As more and more gases were introduced to the War, items were made to help soldiers avoid suffocation. In 1917, the standard issue gas mask was provided as good protection against phosgene and chlorine gases. The idea was good although, when chemical substances hit the suit, it needed to be taken off immediately and washed or it would cause damage to the skin forming blisters. The thought of the chemical warfare is extremely vivid and caused pain among the soldiers in the War.

In April 1915, german scientists were able to use chlorine gas against their enemy. The way they were able to make the gas was by using pressurized cylinders that had chlorine in them. They succeeded with that, but their enemy, Britain did the same thing to them, and each side had commanders uncomfortable with using the gas. Many people thought that it would be a dirty tactic but Germany, France, and Britain still were trying to develop more lethal versions of this. People were scared of this because they would not be able to see the gas attack unlike all of the other kinds of wounds that people would get. When people would see chlorine gas during the war, they would describe it as a green color. It affected people who inhaled it by making their airways swell up causing them to not be able to breathe. There was also another irritant called phosgene but for this, it would take hours, or even days for it to react and for the person who inhaled it to notice. Thankfully, in order to combat this, a "small box respirator" was invented in order for people to be able to breathe while being surrounded by both of these gases.

The affects of ww1 can still be felt today, a good example of this is in the middle east where there are still riots and protest about actions from the war. It brought forth the question of poiltics, economics, and the horrors of war through art, literature, and music for some example. The great war that was meant to end all wars only brought the issues of culture, social, and poiltical. But that's not all, as I mention before it brought the horros of war to everyones mind, some people described it as a war no one wanted but happened any because of our actions. It duration took a toll on many if not all the European countries, many of the soldiers were exhausted, rations were low, and resources were almost gone. The only one that would be left would have been the US since they joined towards the end of the war. But it also opened a door since it allowed minorites to fight and make a chnage with most famously the Harlem hellfighters, and they were honored for their duties even if it was years later.

Another fact is mustard gas, could kill by blistering the lungs and throat if inhaled in large amounts. The total number of British and Empire war deaths caused by gas.

Propaganda was something that was always used but grew incredibly during the World War. It was used to justify the war to the people of that specified country. In Britain, women were depicted as guardians of their homes but the victims of the enemy's terrible attacks. Children were also often depicted in propaganda s their lives were permanently altered because of the war. The most prominent form of propaganda was depicting the enemy. This is shown when Britain would often create propaganda posters depicting exaggerated images of other countries and their groups. Propaganda's main goal was to sway the mental process of the citizens of each country, more than to taunt the other forces.

It started in 1917 when Ladd, was a sculptor who ran a store called "Tin Noses Shop". Then she open another store in Paris and he sculpted faces from people who came from the trenches ware-face and for British soldiers. Ladd mentions that these men didn't want to get seen because of their faces which they said people would pass out just for looking at them. To make these sculpted faces she used plaster mold. Plaster mold was use to fill in the missing parts. She mentions that this would take about several weeks to get done. Then she used a paint brush to match the color of the men from their face. She carves about 100 masks each day and mentions that she is proud that she could do something for these soldiers.

During WWl, since some soldiers lost some of their facial features Anna Coleman Ladd had the idea to make masks for these men who had lost parts of their faces in the war. While listening to the podcast they went over many things and the process it took Anne and her coworkers. They talk about how throughout the time she was there, she and her colleagues made almost 100 masks. Anna Coleman made sure the skin tone of the mask was the same even in different light settings. She would try to match it with their skin tone in the summer as well as their skin tone in the winter. As the war came to an end, Red Cross wasn't able to fund the studio anymore so they stopped making masks and eventually Anna moved back to Boston. I find that what Anna and her colleagues were doing was something extremely thoughtful, especially the process it took and the time they would take on each mask.

"The War to End All Wars" itself never really ended. The purpose of WWI was to create peace and end all conflicts between countries and nations, but that didn't go as planned due to everybody's different perspectives of the war outcome. Even though there were 5 European empires at the beginning of the war - England, Turkey, Russia, Germany, and Austria-Hungary; only Great Britain retained the throne.
African soldiers believe that WWI allowed them to view the real world, seeing people of different races and countries, which changed their consciousness. By the end of the war soldiers were expecting equal rights, just to get denied by the US. The post-war period was important because that's when soldiers got to understand that they deserve more than how they've been treated before. This caused them to not give up so easily and to fight for their rights. The war played an important role because it helped shape the world to think differently, made them learn by experience, and it allows them to make decisions for the future.

You often had to do things you did not want to do. There were people who were dying and never got to see there loved ones again. They actually couldn't do anything because it was up to your ankle in blood, feces, mud, and bodies. Many terrible events occurred, such as people passing away in front of you. But you also had to kill someone who might have had a family. For a Soviet soldier, the situation is considerably worse because there was no food and insufficient ammunition for everyone. Which is why, they had to plan their meals and take all required precautions whenever they could to protect them self.

What I learned from the podcast was that the soldier's most vulnerable part of their body was their face because if they were to look over the trenches their face would be the first to get hit and suffer from facial injuries. When World War 1 broke out, Anna Coleman Ladd started reading stories about French soldiers who lost their faces due to war and she wanted to use her skills to make masks for them. People would be terrified and even pass out due to how the men's faces looked so when Anna made the masks for them, they would go out and people wouldn't stare at all because they would look normal to the others. After the war, Anna went back to what she was doing before the war but people thought it was amazing what she was doing during the war was happening. Anna made sure the masks were comfortable, got to know the patients, and learned about their daily life so she made her studio a welcoming place for the men to just feel happy and relaxed when they would enter. Anna would make parts for the soldier's faces that were missing and try to match their skin tone to how it would be when it was a cloudy or sunny day. Once the war has ended she decided to close up her studio and go back to her hometown.

The first major attack was in now poland. Gen Hoffman watched as 18,000 gas shells rained down russian lines. They were filled with chemical xylyl bromide an early form of tear gas. Chemist tested methods for chrloine gas. People feared that the gas spread would be like a virus. The gas could kill within hours. The gas reacts quickly with water in the airways to form hydrochloric acid, swelling and blocking lung tissue, causing suffocation. I learned that they started producing the standard issue gas mask, which helped from chlorine and phosgene. Mustard gas could kill by, blistering the lungs and throat if inhaled.

Well, after reading this material, I've found that it was difficult. Being in a war at the time was difficult and depressing.

Te'onna williams
The consequences of ww1 still affects us today for many reasons. There were conflicts disrupting the Middle East and Europe till this day. On the bright side the experiments are still seen in art and literature. On the other hand there were 5 European empires at the start of the war - in Turkey, England, Germany, Russia and Austria-Hungary at war end, only King George of Great Britain retained the throne. Even tho the war wasnt all good and it outcomes the new ideas, the classical traditions challenged in art, literature, theater, music and even physics continue to carry a profound influence on contemporary thinking. something that stands out is the soldiers came back changed by their experiences abroad, and the war became a seminal moment in American civil rights history.

The first major gas attack was in Poland on January 31, 1915. The results were disappointing: 18,000 gas shells were released onto the Russians expecting to cause a significant amount of damage but in reality didn't. In April of that year, German chemists tested the use of Chlorine gas onto French soldiers killing many from suffocation. Britain claimed the attack was "a cynical and barbarous disregard of the well-known usages of civilized war" but then followed up four months later using gas on the German trenches. Chemical warfare was considered "a cowardly form of warfare" and "a dirty weapon" even while Germany, Britain, and France were developing it. The usage of gas was eventually outlawed by the Geneva protocol of 1925. Fatalities by gas were 90,000, more than half being Russians who did not have the gas mask to protect themselves. Only 1% of 600,000 service men of Britain getting disability pensions were considered victims of gas.

The gas was used more than the weapons in the war. In 1915 there was a bombshell of 18,000 it went all over the Russian line. It was full of xylyl bromide and tear gas but it wasn't fully developed yet. But the gas didn't work so they tested a different thing that was full of chlorine gas. With no protection in the battle field some of them died. Mustard gas which is used mostly kills by blistering the lungs and throat if you inhale. The Germans were the first to use it.

Facts The Germans were the first to use gas during the war.

The Britain's attacked back with the same thing.
