We generally use the word “stress” as an overarching term to define anything in our life which annoys us or when we feel pressured. However, stress is so much more. According to medicalnewstoday.com, stress is anything that poses a threat to your well being as a human. Stress is a biological advantage which tells our body to prepare and respond as quickly as possible, which is especially useful in the flight or fight response.
When your body sees a bear in the wild, stress in the form of adrenaline immediately pours into the bloodstream, focusing your body on the current dangerous situation at hand and blocking out all other unnecessary details or thoughts.
Stress can also be beneficial in the modern world where people might feel stress to finish a term paper rather than simply letting it fall through, or preparing and focusing your body before a big presentation. However, too much stress can place an enormous amount of strain on the body if it is not kept in check.

According to the American psychological association, as many as 47% of people's report either being stressed out on a weekly basis, or worry about is effect in their lives. Sean Covey also observed in his book: The 6 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, stress was the largest complaint students had about school.
Stress is something which can many affect every single part of your body, directly or indirectly. According to Mayo Clinic, stress can induce headache, chest pain, fatigue, stomach upset, sleep problems, anxiety, lack of motivation, feeling overwhelmed, irritability or anger, depression, overeating or under-eating, angry outbursts, drug or alcohol abuse, social withdrawal and exercising less often.
These symptoms can work together or influence even more parts of your life, causing a “stress snowball” where stress builds up and becomes more and more difficult to get rid of.
As teenagers growing up in a competitive world with expectations, grades, and pressure, it can be difficult for many people to deal with stress, and be able to manage it in the future. However, stress can be much easier to deal with if you know how to manage it and the causes.

Some common causes of stress include a lack of sleep, working/studying too much, financial difficulties, moving somewhere new, being indoors too much, chronic illness, or a lack of exciting or engaging activities in your life.
These symptoms often reduce your mind’s ability to function as efficiently as possible, making it easier for stress to seep into our lives, creating more stress in the process.
They also distract our mind from things such as leisure, exercise, socializing, and rest, all things which allow our body to relax and recover from stress induced activities.
This leads to a negative feedback loop where a less efficient brain has less time to recover to stress, causing stress to built up, thereby further reducing your brains effectiveness to deal with stress, and reducing available time for recovery.

In the Teenage Guide to Stress, Nicola Morgan points out many ways to decrease stress levels including meditation, music, social time, and exercising, and organization as main ways to cope with stress and anxiety. Other recommendations include exercising which releases endorphins, natural body chemicals which block out other stress-causing chemicals.

Being with friends can also rejuvenate your body by talking about your life, and stimulating your social brain and making connections with real people eliminating stress.

Some people also try listening to music or reading, allowing your body leisure, by linking your body’s emotional center with your brain, strengthening the bond between your mind and emotions. According to psychcentral.com, music and reading can “absorb our attention, by acting as a distraction while at the same time helping to explore emotions. This means it can be a great aid to meditation, helping to prevent the mind wandering.”

But one of the most effective techniques to relieve stress is to keep a consistent schedule, waking up, sleeping, and eating at the same time and setting apart time for leisure at similar points throughout the day. This helps focus and give your body more time to hone in on more important things, allowing your to eliminate things that do cause stress in your life.
