Using algae for biofuel is the use of algae or products of algae in the production of biofuels and biodiesel. Lipid produced by algae can be converted into biodiesel while the carbohydrates in them can be fermented into ethanol which has a wide variety of industrial uses and is found in alcoholic drinks. Other byproducts include proteins and other molecules and oxygen. Oxygen is simply released into air while the proteins and other molecules can be processed into other products such as biogas.

Fermenting ethanol from algae lipids is more sustainable than production of ethanol from corn and can be blended with conventional gasoline to decrease carbon emissions from automobiles since it burns more cleanly. This also cuts down on the carbon emission from the production of corn and reduces the need for pesticides that are typically applied to crops. Algae additionally has no nutritional value to us and decreases biofuel’s competition with food sources such as corn. Algae can also act as a direct carbon capture tool as carbon dioxide speeds algae growth and actually benefits them. Placing algae farms next to power plants or in smokestacks is a way to recycle our waste back into the economy. Lastly, aglae, a form of bioenergy, is carbon nearly neutral. Since they are photosynthetic, when algae are burned, it practically releases the same amount of carbon dioxide that it had taken in during photosynthesis in its lifetime, helping us balance our carbon emissions further.

How does it impact the environment?

The use of algae to create biofuel can prevent habitat and biodiversity loss, particularly in Brazil where large swaths of rainforest are being burned everyday for agriculture, by replacing soybeans as a source for biodiesel - which is biodegradable and nontoxic. Algae is fast growing and produces more oil - which is used in biodiesel - than conventional crops such as soybeans, making it a viable alternative. Algae can also make our environment cleaner since they are adapted to thrive in a variety of conditions that we deem as undesirable and are typically harmful to the environment. Algae grow well in salty water such as seawater, sewage water, and water that is nutrient rich from fertilizer runoff. Otherwise, these waste-products would be disposed of - often unsustainably - so, by directing all these waste products towards algae growth and usage of algae as biofuels, we can clean up the environment while producing sustainable fuels. Lastly, various products can be made from algal oils such as bioplastic which - as other biomade products - are biodegradable and don’t harm the environment.

Creating biofuel from algae is currently very expensive. From building and maintaining algae farms to refining it’s oils and other molecules, it’s a very costly system. We would have to have more government support and subsidies in order for biofuel from algae to become popular and interest private investors who will be willing to fund the new energy alternative.
