Although I am half Mexican, I mainly grew up in a Salvadorian community. My father and many of my neighbors I grew up with are from El Salvador.

El Salvador has a long history with gangs. The El Salvador Civil War hits home for me. My dad grew up during the civil war in his country. As a child, he and his brothers were forced to fight in the war along with other kids and adults. After leaving the country for a better life, I am very lucky to hear many of my father's incredible stories.

El Salvador is rich in culture, but one of the most important events is Carnival. Carnival is a festival that travels city to city and last for weeks. Carnival host parades during the day and parties at night. This favorite event among the country, is celebrated in November.

El Salvador is known for its many beautiful beaches. With its warm waters and local shops, it's a huge hit for natives and locals. Just recently, surfing has become much more popular.

Supporting local shops

Portland has many great options for eating out. I love exploring new places but now since I'm back in school, I'm not working as much to afford going out. Recently I've discovered a self own pupusa restaurant that's close to me. Pupusas are one of my favorite childhood foods from my dads country. I love being able to support a local business and getting a childhood treat for cheap. Plus I save so much on gas that I would have spent driving downtown and waiting in traffic.

The latino community has defiantly come a long way of what it used to think/treat mental disorders. I come from a community that used to not believe that much in mental disorders. It seems that the older generation in the latino community mainly agree that mental illness is just a 20 minute phase and that we should get over it. Im so happy to see that the newer generation is more accepting and supporting family members who are in treatment. I think with being supportive can build a strong family.

High schools always a challenge for me. Aside from not having a computer to do homework at home to even not having internet access when the district gave us chrome books to take home, my issues lied deeper. The subjects in high school were always a challenge for me to understand. When grades came, I labeled myself as a dumb person. I believe everyone is smart when it comes to things they are interested in. Not everyone is going to understand algebra. When I went to dental school for dental assistant, I have never felt smarter. Everything was so easy to understand because it was something I was passionate about. From barely passing high school, to receiving all A's in dental school.

I grew up in a very religious household. Although my mom wasn't super religious, my father made us learn about it. It was actually kinda fun growing up especially with the fun Spanish churches and traditions. Now, although change is hard, we are excited to welcome new traditions. My sister is currently pregnant and the father is from a different background and traditions. We are excited to have him and the baby into our lives and to learn new things about his culture and religion.

This week's module was very interesting for me. The social movement that I picked was the MADD movement because it's something that really hits home for me. In my community, alcohol is heavily used whether it's at a party or watching a game at home. If you were to ask a random stranger, chances are that they know someone who had an accident involving driving under the influence. This big problem is now being educated in many schools about the risks and potential aftermath if you were to drive drunk. This week I've discovered and learned so much from the MAAD movement.

While working through out this pallet, I have really reflected a lot within the weeks. Ive learned so many new concepts and so much about the power of social change. Week 9 module hit very close to me and I'm sure others can relate as well. My house hold is very big on alcohol. I come from a bloodline of alcoholics. The social movement I picked to reflect on is the MAAD Movement. I saw front view what alcohol and other substances do I wanna be part of the global change. Many people in my community and even others are also making a change to break the generational chain of abusing alcohol and the risk of driving under the influence.
