The narrator in the story "You Need to Go Upstairs" is a character that focuses on the journey of the main character. Ally the main character is going throughout a journey since she feels challenged by a visitor. Since she is blind the visitor was shocked that she wanted to use the bathroom that was upstairs alone. The narrator talks in 2nd point of view."You are sitting in the garden for the first time this year"(Godden 2). The narrator throughout the story uses the words"you" and "your" as they explain what is happening to Ally and what she is feeling, hearing, touching, and smelling. The narrator speaks throughout most of the story.

Point of View

The story "You Need to Go Upstairs" is based off of 2nd point of view. From the narrator to the characters the story always is in second point of view. Even though the story focuses on Ally's journey; it is mostly the narrator that explains the story and uses key words to prove it is second point of view. The narrator uses the words "you" and "your" to explain what is happening like if the reader was the main character.
" Now you let go of the door-like this-and you go across the hall"(Godden pg. 3). Also the characters use second point of view when they speak to each other " 'Is she all right? Is she?' 'Ally, are you managing?' calls Mother. "(Godden pg. 4). Since the story is in 2nd point we understand what the characters are feeling and thinking when the narrator is speaking as we mostly go through the story as if we were Ally.

The exposition of the story "You Need to Go Upstairs" is when Ally is sitting in her backyard garden with her mother and then Doreen comes with a visitor to help out since Ally is blind. Ally then needs to use the bathroom and she wants to go by herself. " 'Mother, I need to go upstairs,' and you hurry to say, 'I can go by myself, Mother.' "( Godden pg.1). The initial incident is when the visitor gasps in disbelief ,since a blind child wants to go upstairs to use the bathroom by themselves." 'Alone?' breathes the visitor"( Godden pg.2). Next the rising action is when Ally steps on a scraper which is a sharp mat meant for getting mud off the bottom of shoes. This is her first struggle on the way up to the house." Someone, somebody, has left the scraper on the step. It has been pulled right out. You stand there shaking, boiling with anger, the pain hurting in your leg, but there is no sound from the garden; the visitor has not seen."(Godden pg.3).The climax is when Ally faces her biggest fear and climbs to the top of the stares and hopes she will not fall back." You feel the stairs behind you with your foot and they are still there but now you are afraid to let go in case you can't step away. It is steep-steep behind you. Suppose you don't move away? Suppose you hit something-like the chair-and pitch down backwards? "(Godden pg.3). The falling action is when Ally finally goes to the bathroom and uses it and feels accomplished.
" Drops of water burst out on your neck and under your hair, and you leave the rail and step out on to the carpet and walk very boldly towards the verbena and warm toweling and the hot-metal-from-the-bath-taps smell"(Godden pg.4). The resolution is when Ally disproves the visitor and does the task she said she would. She completed her goal. " 'Is she all right? Is she?' 'Ally, are you managing?' calls Mother. 'Perfectly,' you answer, and you shut the loo door " The denouement of the story is Ally gained confidence in herself after proving the visitor wrong and completing her task that the visitor did not believe she could do.

Use of Sensory Language

Touch is a sensory detail that was used to show some of the struggles of being blind throughout the story. Ally enjoys being in the garden ,so she can feel the grass because it is comforting to her." The feel of the grass is good; when press it down and lift your hand the blades spring up again at once as strong as ever; they will not be kept lying down"(Godden pg.1). The sensory detail also symbolizes her life because the grass springing up symbolizes how she will never stop fighting and giving up because it has a flaw. It also foreshadows the rest of the story how it will face problems ,but overcome them like the grass springing back up. Another example of touch sensory detail is when Ally gets hurt on the scraper. " You stand there shaking, boiling with anger, the pain hurting in your leg, but there is no sound from the garden "(Godden pg.3). The narrator explains the pain and struggles of being blind through Ally's conflicts with her environment.

Direct and Indirect Characterization of the Protagonist

Ally is the main protagonist in the short story "You Need to Go Upstairs". An indirect characterization of Ally is impolite because of an action she did towards the visitor. When the visitor was shocked that Ally was going to the bathroom by herself; Ally was rude toward the visitor.
"You turn your back on the visitor." This clearly is evidence that she is rude towards people who have opinions that differ from hers. A direct characterization of Ally is independent and confident. Ally believes she can do a hard task by her self of going to the bathroom. When she completes the task her mother asks how its going and Ally response seems like if it was no big deal because of her word choice." 'Ally, are you managing?' calls Mother. 'Perfectly,' you answer" This quote shows that Ally feels confident in doing this task and is now becoming more independent.

A theme of the story "You Need to Go Upstairs" is confidence with in your capabilities will cause success. This is shown through the story when Ally believed that she could do her goal of going to the bathroom by using things she knew of like objects which indicated where she was. "Mother has put signals there for you, under the rail where no one can find them, and they guide you all the way up"(Godden pg. 3).

The tone with in the story "You Need to Go Upstairs" is intense. Throughout the story Ally faces many dilemmas and challenges which she needs to overcome to complete her goal. "Now? Or not now? Are you facing the right way? "(Godden pg.3). This quote supports the tone of intense because the line's meaning is passionate and deeply felt.

The author of "You Need to Go Upstairs" uses literary devices to describe the setting around Ally and how they feel to her. "The feel of the grass is good; when press it down and lift your hand the blades spring up again at once as strong as ever"(Godden pg.1). This literary device is metaphor and hyperbole. The way the author compares the grass to blades allows the reader to understand how the grass feel to Ally who is blind.

There are 2 major conflicts in "You Need to Go Upstairs" one is Alice(Ally) vs. the visitor and the other is Alice(Ally) vs. the environment. Ally takes on the visitors challenge of using the bathroom without any help since she is blind. The other conflict is shown throughout the story when she struggles going up the stairs and walking on the path to complete the challenge.
