A story from the past Assignment

I am Ahmet Efendi, born in a small Anatolian village towards the end of the 1930s. Back then, the world was a different place; a village without electricity or roads, but with warm-hearted people, living closely connected to the land. My father was a farmer, and my mother was the pillar of our home. We all worked; at dawn, we would go to the fields, and by evening, we would return home tired but happy.

My childhood years passed under the shadow of World War II. Although Turkey did not enter the war, the scarcity, shortages, and difficult times of that era affected us all. We lived with bread ration cards; everything was distributed in measured amounts. Yet, even in those difficult times, the spirit of neighborliness and sharing never faded. Whenever we found a loaf of bread, we shared it with our neighbors.

Then came my youth. We migrated to Istanbul, hoping to find work. Back then, Istanbul was the city of our dreams. Its nights and days were like no other. I started as an apprentice with a weaver. My hands became calloused, but I loved my job. After a few years, with the money I saved through hard work, I opened my own shop. Business went well, I got married, and had three children. I always advised them to be hardworking and honest.

Life offered me a taste of everything: happiness, sorrow, success, and hardship... But most importantly, I lived every moment to the fullest. Now, looking back, I see that every difficulty was followed by ease. At this age, the greatest wealth a person has is the memories they have gathered. Now, here I am, loving my grandchildren, spending time with them. I have so much to share and teach them, just as I am sharing with you.

Last summer, my best friend was moving to another country. We had planned to meet at the airport so I could see him one last time before he left. However, that morning, I overslept and got stuck in traffic on my way there.

By the time I arrived, his flight had already taken off. I felt terrible knowing that he had waited for me, hoping to say goodbye. If I had left home earlier, I wouldn’t have missed the chance to see him one last time.

For days, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. If only I had been more careful with my time, I wouldn’t have felt this guilty. We still keep in touch online, but I regret not being there for our last moment together.
